A Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request was sent to the Union County Clerk's office on January 14, 2025. The request was made by Southern Illinois News, a media organization dedicated to providing comprehensive and accurate news coverage on local governmental affairs.
The FOIA request seeks a list of candidates running for the 2025 Consolidated Elections. Specifically, Southern Illinois News has asked for three pieces of information for each candidate: their name, the date they filed their candidacy, and the office they are running for.
As part of our commitment to transparency and public accountability, we at Southern Illinois News believe in the importance of access to public records. These records allow us to fulfill our professional responsibilities which include holding public institutions accountable and providing transparency to the public.
In line with this belief, we have requested a fee waiver as a media professional under the Illinois Freedom of Information Act. This provision allows for certain fees associated with accessing public records to be waived for members of the media who are involved in gathering and reporting news to the public.
We await a response from the Union County Clerk's office regarding this request.
