City of Metropolis City Council met May 28.

Here are the minutes provided by the council:

The regular meeting of the City Council, City of Metropolis, Illinois was held at 7:00 p.m. on Monday, May 28, 2024, in Council Chambers of City Hall at 106 West 5th Street, Metropolis, Illinois. Upon roll call the following Council members were present: Alderwoman Michele Longworth, Alderman Brian Anderson, Al Wagner, Dylan Chambers, Jermey Holley, Chad Lewis, Chuck Short, Darryl Neill, Corporate Counsel Andrew Leonard, Mayor Don Canada, City Clerk Jan Adams and concerned citizens of Metropolis.

CITIZENS REQUEST:

MAYOR’S REPORT:

We need a consensus to purchase a 2024 Dodge Durango for the Metropolis Police Department. This is a budget item that didn’t get on the agenda and will ratify at the next council meeting.

The Zoning Board of Appeals presented its findings of facts to be approved for a special use permit to construct and use a detached garage at 1212 and 1214 Baynes.

Moved by Alderman Chuck Short and second by Alderman Darryl Neill to accept the Zoning Board of Appeals findings of fact as council reasons for approving a Special Use Permit

Moved by Alderman Al Wagner and second by Alderman Darryl Neill to accept road closure of Market Street from the Northeast corner of the Courthouse lawn thru 8th Street, 6th Street from the driveway of the Detention Center to the drive thru of Legence Bank, 7th Street from Happy Hearts back parking area to the city property on the East side of Market, and 8th Street on the West side from Napa business to the SICIL Drive for the Superman Celebration on June 6th through June 9th

DEPARTMENT HEADS:

Chief Masse stated Office Roger Giltner, and K-9 Officer Krypto passed academy and state certification last week. This allows a full-service K-9 unit to begin Wednesday May 29th.

NEW BUSINESS:

Alderman Holley shared information about an all-inclusive playground equipment opening soon in Southern Illinois. Founder Lenore Ashby, mother and one of the head organizers of Hadley’s Haven, created a place where all can play. Their main drive was to build a playground to keep her daughter’s memory alive, with an all-inclusive playground. Holley thought this would be a great idea for Lincoln Park, or any other city owned park.

Alderman Holley following up to see if there were any updates concerning handicapped parking on Market Street. The mayor said he would have the street department check on it.

Alderwoman Michele Longworth created a survey asking for public input on how to utilize Lincoln Park. Out of the 19 responses only one stated we need to establish a business on the property. She stated she would share the results of this survey at a later meeting.

FINANCIAL REPORT:

Moved by Alderman Chad Lewis and second by Alderman Jemery Holley to approve the Finance Report be received and approved and that the orders be drawn on the Treasurer for the different amounts mentioned therein and that the Mayor and the City Clerk be authorized to make necessary arrangements for payment of current Salaries, Payroll and Contract bills.

Moved by Alderman Jeremy Holley to and second by Alderman Dylan Chambers approve the Finance Report be received and approved and that the orders be drawn on the Treasurer for the different amounts mentioned therein and that the Mayor and the City Clerk be authorized to make necessary arrangements for payment of miscellaneous bills.
