Anna Community Consolidated School District 37 Board of Education met March 9.

Board President Grant Capel called the meeting to order at 5:30 p.m.

A motion was made by Dave Sullivan and seconded by Jim Hammer to approve the amended agenda for the meeting. Roll call vote: Grant Capel, yea; Cheryl Ligon, yea; Josh Gooden, yea; Pam Needling, yea; Dave Sullivan, yea; Jim Hammer, yea. Motion carried.

Hannah Youngman gave public comment regarding safety concerns, such as door locks and security systems.

Principal Laster responded to safety concerns explaining reasoning and processes. Jason Hall gave public comment regarding door locks.

Mark Smith gave public comment regarding asbestos issues.

Jennifer Osman gave public comment regarding inside window coverings.

A motion was made by Cheryl Ligon and seconded by Josh Gooden to enter executive session for the purpose of the appointment, employment, compensation, discipline, performance, or dismissal of specific employees of the public body or legal counsel for the public body, including hearing testimony on a complaint lodged against an employee of the public body or against legal counsel for the public body to determine its validity. 5 ILCS 120/2(c)(1) Roll call vote: Grant Capel, yea; Cheryl Ligon, yea; Josh Gooden, yea; Pam Needling, yea; Dave Sullivan, yea; Jim Hammer, yea. Motion carried.

Board went into executive session at 6:27 p.m.

Board paused 7:33 p.m. – 7:50 p.m.

Board returned to open session at 8:39 p.m.

The Board of Education released the following statement:

“Public Statement March 9, 2023

First, Board members want to thank the public for thoughtful input and insightful questions about school safety issues. The health and safety of our students is always a primary concern.

Second, the Board members discussed a personnel matter and some concerns that were raised recently. The Board takes these concerns seriously. We have directed appropriate steps to be taken. We will promptly seek an outside, independent review.

Finally, Counsel for the District has advised the Board not to have further comment on the matter at this time. The Board will continue to respect the privacy and confidentiality of all employees, and continue to promote an educational environment that is respectful, responsible, and supports right choices for the best interests of all students in the District.”

A motion was made by Cheryl Ligon and seconded by Jim Hammer to adjourn at 8:40 p.m. with the next meeting being a regular meeting scheduled for March 20, 2023 at 5:30 p.m. Voice vote: Motion carried.
