The Rebuild Illinois capitol plan is picking up the pace in its efforts to keep college-bound seniors here at home.
The start of the current school year was marred by large declines in enrollment at several schools, including at Chicago State where freshmen enrollment declined 30 percent, and at Illinois State University in Normal, which saw a 13 percent dip in new freshmen.
In recent times, several major projects have been launched with the goal of keeping kids in state for school, including at Southern Illinois University.
More recently, Gov. J.B. Pritzker was on hand for a ceremony at the College of Lake County where a new student services building will be built.
“We watched as nearly half of our college-bound high school seniors left our state for better funded universities out of state,” Pritzker said. “We won’t let that happen any longer.”
As part of the retention plan, the state is providing $35.3 million for the College of Lake County project with the remainder being covered by local matching funds.
