The price of local government in 2016: Union County

Budget 09

The Union County budget was $33 million for its 2016 fiscal year.

That's an increase of 114.3 percent from 2014, when the county spent $15.40 million.

Union County has a population of 17,212.

Since 2001, the Union County budget has grown by 221.9 percent, from $10.25 million. The county population has fallen 5.9 percent over the same period, from 18,293.

Salaries accounted for 11.1 percent of county spending in 2016. Union County property taxpayers paid $3.65 million for 96 full-time employees, or an average of $37,983 each, before their health care benefits and taxpayer-funded pension contributions.

In 2001, the county had 100 full-time employees and 20 part-time employees, and spent $3.88 million.
