Johnson County issued the following announcement on Aug. 23.
Penny Postoak Ferguson, county manager, has appointed Maury Thompson as deputy county manager. He has served as the interim deputy county manager since January 2018. Prior to that, Thompson served as assistant county manager beginning in January 2013. The new position is effective Aug. 26.
“I am pleased to serve our organization in this capacity and look forward to continued work with our approximately 4,000 employees who strive daily to provide the highest quality programs and services to the residents of Johnson County,” said Thompson,.
Thompson began his career within the organization at Johnson County Developmental Supports (JCDS) in 1986, serving multiple roles. In 2001, he left to serve as executive director at Tri-Valley Developmental Services in Chanute, Kansas. There, he served as president of the Chanute Area Chamber of Commerce and Office of Tourism (2004), as a member of the Chanute City Commission (2005-06) and as mayor of Chanute (2006-07).
In 2007, Thompson returned to JCDS to serve as executive director until joining the Johnson County Manager’s Office as assistant county manager in 2013.
“Johnson County residents have benefitted from Maury’s wealth of experience in health and human services and social service administration, criminal justice, legislative affairs and workforce development,” said County Manager Penny Postoak Ferguson. “Maury has strong relationships and valuable leadership experience with several non-profits, taskforces and other organizations.”
Some highlights from Thompson’s professional accomplishments include:
Integrating behavioral and physical health with other social services and health education in a “health home” model
Creating a Community Behavioral Health Team that provides services to people with a mental health issue and an intellectual or developmental disability
Providing criminal justice guidance and coordinating/implementing system improvements within Johnson County District Courts and the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office
Developing a framework to address the Board of County Commissioners’ strategic poverty initiative
Thompson received his bachelor’s degree in political science and criminal justice with a minor in business administration in 1984 from Mount Mercy College, Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and a master’s degree in public administration from Park College Graduate School of Public Affairs, Kansas City, Missouri, in 1998. He is a graduate of Leadership Kansas and the Johnson County, Kansas Sheriff’s Citizen’s Academy.
Civic leadership roles include serving as the Kansas co-chair for Mid-America Regional Council’s Complex Coordinated Terrorist Attack Taskforce and Public Safety Communications Board, as well as treasurer for United Community Services of Johnson County. He is a member of the International City/County Management Association and the Kansas Association of City/County Management.
