Pope County ranks 100th in total sales taxes paid in Illinois during 2023

Pope County taxpayers ranked 100th in total sales taxes paid per county in 2023, according to Illinois tax records.

In total, residents paid $297,412 in sales taxes during 2023.

The county also ranked 100th in the Prairie State the year before, with $259,598 spent in sales taxes.

The largest share of sales taxes paid by Pope County residents in 2023 came from the County Sales Tax.

The County Sales Tax is a local sales tax imposed on retail sales of goods and services within a specific county. It is one of the primary sources of revenue for county governments, funding a wide range of essential services, including education, infrastructure, public safety, public health, and social services. The average rate imposed in Illinois is around 8.2%.

As of 2021, Illinois was the highest taxed state in the US. A study from Wallet Hub found Illinois taxes were 39.83% higher than the national average.
