Johnson County ranks 70th in total sales taxes paid in Illinois during 2023

Johnson County taxpayers ranked 70th in total sales taxes paid per county in 2023, according to Illinois tax records.

In total, residents paid approximately $1.8 million in sales taxes during 2023.

The county also ranked 70th in the Prairie State the year before, with approximately $1.7 million spent in sales taxes.

The largest share of sales taxes paid by Johnson County residents in 2023 came from the Special County Retailers Occupation Tax.

The Special County Retailers Occupation Tax, a crucial revenue stream, is primarily allocated for county governments' use.

As of 2021, Illinois was the highest taxed state in the US. A study from Wallet Hub found Illinois taxes were 39.83% higher than the national average.
