Prairie State Taxes: Union County residents rank 52nd in total sales taxes paid for 2023

Union County taxpayers ranked 52nd in total sales taxes paid per county in 2023, according to Illinois tax records.

In total, residents paid just over $4.1 million in sales taxes during 2023.

The county ranked 53rd in the Prairie State the year before, with approximately $4.1 million spent in sales taxes.

The largest share of sales taxes paid by Union County residents in 2023 came from the Special County Retailers Occupation Tax.

The Special County Retailers Occupation Tax, a crucial revenue stream, is primarily allocated for county governments' use.

As of 2021, Illinois was the highest taxed state in the US. A study from Wallet Hub found Illinois taxes were 39.83% higher than the national average.
