CITIZENS REQUEST:

Detective Sgt. Mike Kennedy presented his resignation to the council. He has served 23 years with the Metropolis Police Department and will retire on December 5th. He was hired in 2001 under Police Chief Chuck Short. He worked patrol for two years and loved his job. He felt a calling to speak for the victims in a greater capacity. Later, Police Chief Mike Worthen noticed his attention to detail and attentiveness in the court room and approached him about becoming a detective and was appointed to the detective division. He worked under Detective Sgt. Scott Deming and felt over the next 14 years he helped a lot of people during this time as a detective. Later he took the promotional exam for sergeant and was promoted in February 2019. Under the current administration he was asked if he would run the detective division and has for the last six years. Kennedy stated “It has been an amazing 23 years working for the Metropolis Police Department and want to say thank you for the opportunity to serve our community and try to make it a better and safer place to live. I give glory to God for everything. God has taken me through my career and has carried me through everything. I’m so blessed to have been able to do what I love. Thank you for that opportunity”. He received a standing ovation for his service and dedication. We wish him well on his future endeavors.

Tiffany Korte representing Farmer & Company Real Estate shared more information on the Placemaking Grant. The Election Board of Realtors partners with local governments to transform underused spaces into vibrant places for the community. The project can be used to create a new space or improve an existing public gathering or to assist with construction. There are two levels of grant money, $3,000 maximum awarded on Level 1 and Level 2 a $7,500 maximum. Associations may receive one grant per calendar year. Several projects have been approved such as wellness-focused garden, offering veterans a space for relaxation and connection with other local veterans, park benches for exiting parks, cornhole pits and dog parks to name a few. The mayor asked their ideas to be emailed to him by December 2nd, to see if the application can be submitted. There is an opportunity in early January and early February if we fail to meet the December 4th deadline.
