Alden-Hebron School District 19 Board of Education met Nov. 20.

Here are the minutes provided by the board:

President Smith called the regular meeting of the Board of Education of Alden-Hebron Community Consolidated Unit School District #19 to order at 7:00 pm.

Roll Call

PRESENT: Mrs. Smith, Mr. Winkelman, Mr. Madsen, Mr. Misiek, Mr. Eskridge, Mr. Berg, Mrs. Johnson

ABSENT: None

ALSO PRESENT:

Tiffany Elswick-Superintendent, Aaron Butler-MS/HS Principal, Eric Slocum-ES Principal, Katie Beck SSC/Business Manager, Teachers: Colleen Geils, Sophie Matla, Kelly Taugner, Emma Wodek, Leanette Kolnik; Deanna VanderPal-recording secretary, Nick Ciccotosto

Public Comments

Staff Comments

Mrs. VanderPal reported to the BOE that there is a date error in the Personnel Report for the retirement of an ES teacher. The date is supposed to be listed as May of 2025, not May of 2024.

Board Comments

● Mr. Eskridge thanked the students and staff for the wonderful Veteran’s Day ceremony. He mentioned that there will be a meat raffle at Hoops on December 7 from 4-7pm to benefit the Hebron Food Pantry.

● Mr. Winkelman stated that the Veteran’s Day ceremony was great and that he is so proud of our students and our community. He mentioned that winter sports are beginning and urged everyone to come out and support the student athletes.

● Mr. Berg thanked everyone who came out for the Booster Club Feather Party. It was very well attended and quite a success.

Mr. Berg moved; Mr. Winkelman seconded to approve the consent agenda as presented with item “G.” removed to correct an error.

AYES: Mrs. Smith, Mr. Winkelman, Mr. Madsen, Mr. Misiek, Mr. Eskridge, Mr. Berg, Mrs. Johnson

NAYS: None

ABSENT: None

Motion Carried

Mrs. Johnson moved; Mr. Misiek seconded to approve of the Personnel Report with the corrected retirement date for an ES teacher from May of 2024 to May of 2025.

BUSINESS

ADMINISTRATION

Mrs. Elswick – Superintendent – as presented

Mrs. Elswick added:

● Recognition for teachers and staff regarding the growth as shown by the Illinois School Report Card

● Recognition of BOE members in honor of School Board Appreciation Month

● She held the first bilingual Parent Advisory Committee with the help of D19’s two bilingual paraprofessionals: Mrs. Villalobos and Mrs. Huerta.

● Joint Annual Conference to be attended this weekend by Admin staff and BOE members

● Presented schedule for 2025 BOE meetings

● Presented 2025-2026 school calendar

Mr. Misiek moved; Mr. Winkelman seconded to approve the times and dates of the 2024 Board of Education meetings as presented.

Mr. Eskridge moved; Mr. Winkelman seconded to approve the 2025-2026 school calendar as presented. Motion Carried

Mr. Butler-MS/HS Principal – as presented

Mr. Butler added:

● He is impressed with the growth of the MS/HS as shown by the Illinois School Report Card

● The Greenhouse “skin” is on, now just waiting to get utilities hooked up.

Mr. Slocum-ES Principal – as presented

Mr. Slocum praised the teachers and staff of D19 for the growth as shown by the Illinois School Report Card.

SPECIAL EDUCATION—as presented

Mrs. Beck thanked the teachers for their hard work and diligence that raised D19’s scores as shown by the Illinois School Report Card.

FINANCE

Mrs. Beck presented the tentative 2024 Levy with a plan to levy for 4.99%.

Mr. Eskridge moved; Mr. Misiek seconded to approve the tentative 2024 Levy of 4.99% as prepared by Mrs. Beck.

AYES: Mrs. Smith, Mr. Winkelman, Mr. Madsen, Mr. Misiek, Mr. Eskridge, Mr. Berg, Mrs. Johnson

NAYS: None

PHYSICAL STRUCTURES/MAINTENANCE—as presented

Mrs. Elswick requested approval to submit the Maintenance Grant for ADA/Health, Life, Safety items with the work to be done by Wold Architechts and Stern Built Builders.

Mr. Eskridge moved; Mr. Misiek seconded to approve submission of the Maintenance Grant for ADA/Health, Life, Safety items with the work to be done by Wold Architechts and Stern Built Builders as presented.

CURRICULUM/POLICY

The Policy Committee will meet in the District Office on Wednesday, December 18th at 5:30pm, before the BOE meeting.

VILLAGE

No report

TOWNSHIP

● Alden Township: Mr. Madsen attended the Alden Township meeting on 11/14/24. Items discussed included:

⮚ Business as usual; payment of bills

⮚ Town and Road funds were approved

⮚ The township needs an additional Trustee

● Hebron Township: Mr. Eskridge attended the Hebron Township meeting on 11/14/24. Items discussed included:

⮚ A new staking at the cemetery

⮚ Use of PACE bus by Hebron Community members

⮚ Work on VanderKarr Road has been halted and will resume in the spring.

Future Agenda Items

Mrs. Johnson suggested that specific committee members come in to the District Office to view items that are pertinent to their committees prior to the BOE meetings so they can share their input regarding those items at the meetings.

● Mr. Misiek wished everyone a happy Thanksgiving and thanked the staff for their hard work in attaining the growth as shown by the Illinois School Report Card.

● The sentiment was echoed by Mr. Berg, Mrs. Johnson, and Mr. Winkelman.

● Mrs. Smith concurred and added that she is so proud of the achievements of the staff of this small school.

● Mr. Eskridge thanked everyone who has put their name on the ballot for the Alden-Hebron School Board for the election on April 1, 2025
