On September 26, 2024, we at Southern Illinois News sent a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request to Pulaski County, seeking detailed information about vendor payments made within the county from January 1 to September 26, 2024.

The requested records include the name of each vendor paid during this period, the date of each transaction, a description of each transaction, and the amount paid in each transaction. This comprehensive list will provide insight into how public funds are being utilized in Pulaski County.

As a media organization dedicated to reporting on local governmental affairs with accuracy and depth, access to such public records is vital for us at Southern Illinois News. These records allow us to hold public institutions accountable and ensure transparency for our readership.

The request for these records comes amidst significant transportation improvements across Illinois under Governor JB Pritzker's Rebuild Illinois program. Announced by the Illinois Department of Transportation in July 2023, this extensive multi-year initiative aims to enhance all modes of transportation across the state.

Governor Pritzker stated that over $40 billion would be invested over six years towards improving roads and bridges, modernizing transit and aviation, and expanding passenger rail service. Ten major projects are currently planned or underway in Chicago alone under this program, with an investment of $396 million.

Three out of these ten projects are expected to be completed by the end of 2024. The remaining seven projects are projected for completion between 2025 and 2030. Additionally, $107 million has been allocated for seven projects in Kane County while central Cook County is set to receive $220 million for ten infrastructure development projects.

As we continue our journalistic endeavors at Southern Illinois News, we believe that providing our readers with detailed information about county vendor payments will contribute to a broader understanding of how public funds are being utilized in the context of these significant statewide initiatives.
