City of Metropolis City Council met Aug. 12.

Here are the minutes provided by the council:

The regular meeting of the City Council, City of Metropolis, Illinois was held at 7:00 p.m. on Monday, August 12th, 2024, in Council Chambers of City Hall at 106 West 5th Street, Metropolis, Illinois. Upon roll call the following Council members were present: Alderwoman Michele Longworth, Alderman Jeremy Holley, Chad Lewis, Brian Anderson, Dylan Chambers, Al Wagner, Darryl Neill, Chuck Short, Corporate Counsel Andrew Leonard, Mayor Don Canada, City Clerk Jan Adams and concerned citizens of Metropolis.

ROLL CALL:

Moved by Alderman Chad Lewis and second by Alderman Darryl Neill to approve the minutes of the previous meeting held meeting on 7-22-2024 as presented. MOTION CARRIED:

CITIZENS REQUEST:

MAYOR’S REPORT:

Alderman Holley questioned some of the materials listed on the grant application. He requested we subtract the ladder changing the payment to $1,735.54

Moved by Alderman Jeremy Holley and second by Alderman Al Wagner to approve payment to Brush Optical for the completed Business Improvement Grant project (tuckpointing) in the amount of $1,735.54

CORPORATE COUNSEL:

Moved by Alderman Chad Lewis and second by Alderman Darryl Neill to make a motion to seek bids for the sale of improved property located at 1601 Market Street MOTION CARRIED:

DEPARTMENT HEADS:

Chief Masse was pleased to announce the annual National Night Out and the End of Summer Bash at the pool were both successful and enjoy by all who attended. Between the two events 600 hot dogs and 300 hamburgers were served. He added the next two events are Trunk or Treat and Shop with a Cop.

NEW BUSINESS:

Alderman Holley wanted to remind everyone about the quarterly cleanup is this week (August 12-16).

Alderman Chambers inquired if we are ready to publicize information on the abatement process and was informed that graphics are being added before its publicized.

Holley stated we all need to be cautious; school has begun and there are several school bus routes in town.

Alderman Lewis commented how rough the roads are from 5th Street to Front Street. Mayor Canada stated we have already spoke with HMG Engineers about the project.

Mayor Canada informed the council HMG Engineers is looking at the cost to finish Phase One in the Industrial Park and will keep them updated.

Alderwoman Longworth shared a concern from Tammy Wells. Ms. Wells stated the railroad ties used at the public parking lot at the corner of 6th and Pearl Street are a health hazard. She lives across the street and would like them removed. Mayor Canada said we would look into the matter.

FINANCIAL REPORT:

Moved by Alderman Chad Lewis and second by Alderman Jeremy Holley to approve the Finance Report be received and approved and that the orders be drawn on the Treasurer for the different amounts mentioned therein and that the Mayor and the City Clerk be authorized to make necessary arrangements for payment of current Salaries, Payroll and Contract bills. MOTION CARRIED:

Moved by Alderman Dlyan Chambers and second by Alderman Jeremy Holley to approve the Finance Report be received and approved and that the orders be drawn on the Treasurer for the different amounts mentioned therein and that the Mayor and the City Clerk be authorized to make necessary arrangements for payment of miscellaneous bills. MOTION CARRIED:
