Community Unit School District 201 Board of Education met July 25.

CALL TO ORDER

On July 25, 2023, at 6:01 p.m. President Adina Hoover called to order the regular meeting of the Community Unit School District 201 Board of Education.

Roll Call

Members present: Adina Hoover, Whitney Rogers, Kevin Marren, Angela Steketee, Leah Conover, Carlos Hevia, Jessica Radogno

Also present: Superintendent Jack Baldermann; Business Manager Anthony Ruelli; and the Superintendent’s Administrative Assistant, Shannon Cossairt.

Pledge of Allegiance

President Hoover led the assembly in the Pledge of Allegiance.

CLOSED SESSION

Motion by Ms. Steketee, second by Mr. Marren, to enter closed session to discuss personnel issues, lease or purchase of property, and to conduct the Board Self Evaluation with an IASB representative.

Ayes: Radogno, Steketee, Hevia, Rogers, Conover, Marren, Hoover

Nays: None.

Motion Carried.

The Board moved to closed session at 6:03 p.m.

The Board returned to open session at 7:48 p.m.

APPROVAL OF MINUTES

Motion by Ms. Radogno, second by Mr. Hevia, to approve the minutes of the June 20, 2023 regular meeting of the Board of Education, as presented.

Ayes: Radogno, Steketee, Hevia, Rogers, Conover, Marren, Hoover

Nays: None.

Motion Carried.

Closed Session

Motion by Ms. Conover, second by Mr. Marren, to approve the minutes of the closed session of the June 20, 2023, regular meeting of the Board of Education, as presented.

Ayes: Radogno, Steketee, Hevia, Rogers, Conover, Marren, Hoover

Nays: None.

Motion Carried.

PUBLIC COMMENT

No public comment was made.

CONSENT AGENDA

Motion by Mr. Hevia, second by Ms. Radogno, to approve the Consent Agenda as presented.

1. Personnel Recommendations

2. Approval of July 2023 Expenditure Report 

3. Ratification of June 2023 Regular Payroll

4. Renewal of SELF Workers Compensation

Ayes: Steketee, Hevia, Rogers, Conover, Marren, Hoover, Radogno

INFORMATION/DISCUSSION

Presentation of Monthly Financial Statements- June 2023

Anthony Ruelli, CSBO, gave the Board an update on the District’s financials for June 2023. His update included a short review of revenue and expenditures to date. All documents can be found in BoardDocs.

Tentative 2023-2024 Budget

Mr. Ruelli, CSBO, reviewed the Tentative Budget for the 2023- 2024 school year with the Board. The budget will be available for viewing until September 26, 2023, when it will be presented to the Board for a hearing and adoption.

Pilot of Curriculum Materials at Westmont Junior High School

Dr. Nadine Norris, Director of Technology, Teaching, and Learning, shared with the Board information about a program the junior high would like to pilot for the 2023-2024 school year. This can be paid for using ESSER III funds. The program is Amplify ELA and would help integrate both print and online materials for an all inclusive program focused on close reading.

ACTION ITEMS

Approval of Authorization to Pay Additional July Bills for the 2023 and 2024 Fiscal Years

Motion by Ms. Conover, second by Mr. Hevia, to authorize and direct the Treasurer to pay any additional bills received in July that have been budgeted for in the current or prior fiscal year, as presented

Ayes: Hevia, Rogers, Conover, Marren, Hoover, Radogno, Steketee

Nays: None.

Approval of Tentative 2023- 2024 Budget

Motion by Ms. Steketee, second by Mr. Marren, to approve the Tentative 2023-2024 Budget as presented and that said budget will be available for public inspection in the Districts Business

Office from July 26, 2023, until Board adoption on Tuesday, September 26, 2023.

Ayes: Rogers, Conover, Marren, Hoover, Radogno, Steketee, Hevia

Nays: None.

Motion carried.

Approval of Consultant for Audit and Evaluation Process for Principals

Motion by Mr. Hevia, second by Mr. Marren, to approve the consultant contract for Jeanne Spiller to audit the evaluation process for principals, as presented.

Ayes: Conover, Radogno, Hoover, Rogers, Steketee, Hevia, Marren

Nays: None.

Motion carried.

Approval of Core Curriculum Materials for Reading at Westmont Junior High School

Motion by Mr. Marren, second by Ms. Steketee, to approve the purchase of Amplify ELA 6-8 core instructional materials to be deployed during the 2023-2024 school year.

Ayes: Radogno, Hoover, Rogers, Steketee, Hevia, Marren, Conover

Nays: None.

SUPERINTENDENT’S REPORT

Communications

Superintendent Baldermann thanked Mr. Ruelli and all the staff for the handling of registration. It was great to see the community and students. This summer the District staff has been preparing and setting ambitious goals. We do have a new slogan “Attendance Matters- No More Than 5.” We need students in school.

Update on Meeting Minutes/Agendas/Curriculum

None at this time.

BOARD REPORTS

Angela Steketee is asking families to reach out to the PTO and Boosters to see how they can help. The Board would also like to see a summary for all the great things the District was doing over the summer.
