City of Metropolis City Council met Feb. 13.

Here are the minutes provided by the council:

The regular meeting of the City Council, City of Metropolis, Illinois was held  at 7:00 p.m. on Monday, February 13, 2023 in Council Chambers of City Hall at  106 West 5th Street, Metropolis, Illinois. Upon roll call the following Council  members were present: Alderwoman Michele Longworth, Aldermen Jeremy  Holley, Chuck Short, Brian Anderson, Chad Lewis, Darryl Neill, Al Wagner, Mayor  Don Canada, Corporate Counsel Rick Abell, City Clerk Jan Adams and concerned  citizens of Metropolis. Alderman Dylan Chambers conferenced in.

Moved by Alderman Jeremy Holley and second by Alderwoman Michele  Longworth to approve the minutes of the previous meeting held on 1-23-2023 as  presented;

MAYOR’S REPORT: 

The mayor introduced Andrew Leonard as our new part-time corporate  counsel. He owns his own firm, Leonard Law Firm, in Paducah, Kentucky. We want  to welcome him and look forward to building a working relationship. 

Moved by Alderman Chuck Short and second by Alderman Brian Anderson  to approve the appointment of Corporate Counsel;

A proclamation recognizing Harrahs success in the City of Metropolis was  read aloud. It’s proclaimed by the mayor and the council the month of February  shall be known as Harrahs Metropolis month. They have been a pillar of the  business community for 30 years. They provided thousands of job opportunities for local residents and surrounding communities, provided millions of dollars in  financial assistance in support of the following community programs; COPE,  Guardian House, United Way, MCDAC, Project Hope, Metropolis Chamber of  Commerce and Back to School to name a few. Harrahs Metropolis has also  contributed to American Cancer Society, Alzheimer’s Association and many more.  We are proud to have them in Metropolis and thank them for their continual  support and services to the community.  

Moved by Alderwoman Michele Longworth and second by Alderman Darryl  Neill to approve Proclamation for Harrah’s anniversary;

Moved by Alderman Brian Anderson and second by Alderman Al Wagner to accept authorizing the Fire & Police Commission to fill two vacancies with the  next available candidates on the Eligibility List at Fire Department due to a  retirement and a resignation;

FINANCIAL REPORT:

Moved by Alderman Chad Lewis and second by Alderman Jeremy Holley to approve the Finance Report be received and approved and that the orders be  drawn on the Treasurer for the different amounts mentioned therein and that the  Mayor and the City Clerk be authorized to make necessary arrangements for  payment of current Salaries, Payroll and Contract bills;
