Community Unit School District 201 Board of Education met Feb. 14.

Here are the minutes provided by the board:

CALL TO ORDER 

On February 14, 2023, at 6:01 p.m. President Hoover called to order the regular meeting of the Community Unit School District 201 Board of Education. 

Roll Call 

Members present: Adina Hoover, Kevin Marren, Angela Steketee, Leah Conover, Carlos Hevia 

Members absent: Laura Coyle, Jessica Radogno 

Also present: Superintendent Kevin Carey, Business Manager Anthony Ruelli, and the Superintendent's Administrative Assistant, Shannon Cossairt 

Pledge of Allegiance 

President Hoover led the assembly in the Pledge of Allegiance. 

CLOSED SESSION 

Motion by Mr. Hevia, second by Ms. Conover, to enter closed session to discuss personnel issues, student discipline, and collective bargaining. 

Ayes: Marren, Hevia, Conover, Steketee, Hoover 

Nays: None. 

Motion Carried. 

The Board moved to closed session at 6:02 p.m. 

The Board returned to open session at 7:00 p.m. 

PUBLIC COMMENT 

None at this time. 

APPROVAL OF MINUTES January 24, 2023 

Motion by Ms. Steketee, second by Ms. Conover, to approve the minutes of the January 24, 2023 regular meeting of the Board of Education, as amended. 

Ayes: Marren, Steketee, Conover, Hevia 

Nays: None. 

Abstain: Adina Hoover 

Motion Carried. 

January 24, 2023 Closed Session 

Motion by Mr. Marren, second by Ms. Steketee, to approve the minutes of the closed session of the January 24, 2023, regular meeting of the Board of Education, as presented. 

Ayes: Marren, Steketee, Conover, Hevia 

Nays: None. 

Abstain: Adina Hoover 

Motion Carried. 

CONSENT AGENDA 

Motion by Mr. Hevia, second by Ms. Conover, to approve the Consent Agenda as presented. 

1. Personnel Recommendations 

2. Student Tour Request - WHS 

Ayes: Hevia, Conover, Steketee, Hoover, Marren 

Nays: None 

Motion Carried. 

INFORMATION/DISCUSSION 

Update on Summer School 

Superintendent Carey shared with the Board an update on the plan for summer school. At this time the elementary and junior high will be focusing on literacy and it will be by invite only. The high school will have similar offerings to last year. The plan will be up for review and approval at the February 28, 2023 meeting. 

Discipline Data 

Superintendent Carey has been reviewing discipline data from the elementary, junior high, and high school since the start of this school year. He presented to the Board his findings and how it broke down per school. The next step will be for him and the administration to dig deeper into the findings. 

Strategic Plan Update 

Dr. Nadine Norris, Director of Technology, Teaching and Learning, presented to the Board and update on the Strategic Plan. She discussed the following: 

Information 

• Portrait of a Graduate 

• Long Range Goals 

• Student Achievement Goals 

• High-Quality Teaching Goals 

• Student/Stakeholder Engagement Goals 

• Alignment of Resources Goals 

• Questions 

Transportation Update 

Anthony Ruelli, CSBO, presented to the Board information on the current transportation situation in the District. His presentation included the following: 

• Transportation Contracts 

• Westway Busing Statistics

• Sunrise Busing Statistics 

• Taxi Busing Statistics 

• Transportation Financials 

• Historical Transportation Fund Balances 

• Projected Transportation Fund Balances 

• Financial Impacts 

• Immediate Solution 

• Questions? 

Mr. Ruelli will continue to discuss transportation at future meetings.

CLOSED SESSION 

WHS History Textbook Adoption Proposal 

Motion by Mr. Hevia, second by Ms. Conover, to approve the adoption of the proposed history textbooks at Westmont High School, as presented. 

Ayes: Conover, Steketee, Hoover, Marren, Hevia 

Nays: None. 

Motion Carried. 

SUPERINTENDENT'S  REPORT 

Communications 

The Essentials Survey is open and the District is encouraging parents to complete it. The survey is designed to provide a detailed picture of our schools. 

CUSD 201 parent organizations are planning a Golden Jubilee celebrating our 50th year as a unit district. Tickets are on sale  now. 

FOIA 

There are no FOIA requests at this time. 

Update on Meeting Minutes/Agendas/Curriculum 

None at this time. 

BOARD REPORTS 

Ms. Conover gave an update on the SASED Board and the anticipated changes. 

Ms. Steketee would like to thank the high school for a successful Incoming 9th Grade Night. She would also like to congratulate all those who were inducted into the Hall of Fame at the high school last week. 

Ms. Hoover shared the Board is working with the new Superintendent as part of the transition process.

Motion by Ms. Conover, second by Ms. Steketee, to adjourn the February 14, 2023, regular meeting of the Board of Education at 8:12 p.m. 

Motion unanimously passed.
