City of Metropolis City Council met Jan. 23.

Here are the minutes provided by the council:

The regular meeting of the City Council, City of Metropolis, Illinois was held at 7:00 p.m. on Monday, January 23, 2023 in Council Chambers of City Hall at 106 West 5th Street, Metropolis, Illinois. Upon roll call the following Council members were present: Alderwoman Michele Longworth, Aldermen Jeremy Holley, Chuck Short, Brian Anderson, Chad Lewis, Darryl Neill, Al Wagner, Mayor Don Canada, Corporate Counsel Rick Abell, City Clerk Jan Adams and concerned citizens of Metropolis. Alderman Dylan Chambers was absent.

ROLL CALL:

Anderson Yea; Longworth Yea; Chambers Absent; Neill Yea; Holley Yea; Short Yea; Lewis Yea; Wagner Yea

Moved by Alderman Jeremy Holley and second by Alderman Dlyan Chambers to approve the minutes of the previous meeting held on 1-9-2023 as presented;

MAYOR’S REPORT:

Mayor Canada presented Rick with a rocking chair for his 20 years of dedication and service to the city and wished him well in all his future endeavors. He will continue his private practice at Richard Kruger Law Firm and stated he would still be available if they had any questions or concerns.

CITIZEN’S REQUEST:

Julian “Butch” Adams shared a notarized letter informing them of his meeting with the County Tax Assessor. He was told his property is grandfathered in and had no worries about the zoning code violations against the property. They also told him a portion of our building was on his property. Butch added he will begin charging $500 the city rent beginning July dating back January 1, 2020. Butch stated the city could buy his lot for $50,000, the mayor declined his offer. Butch then added he would give the city $4,000 for the building and the right-of way to Seventh Street. He has requested sewer and water over the years but was never granted. The lot behind him has old cars with trees growing up through them. He commented there is nothing on his lot that is unsafe and used it to give back to the community.

FINANCIAL REPORT:

Moved by Alderman Jeremy Holley and second by Alderman Chad Lewis to approve the Finance Report be received and approved and that the orders be drawn on the Treasurer for the different amounts mentioned therein and that the Mayor and the City Clerk be authorized to make necessary arrangements for payment of current Salaries, Payroll and Contract bills;

Moved by Alderman Dylan Chambers and second by Alderman Jeremy Holley to approve the Finance Report be received and approved and that the orders be drawn on the Treasurer for the different amounts mentioned therein and that the Mayor and the City Clerk be authorized to make necessary arrangements for payment of miscellaneous bills;

Moved by Alderman Dlyan Chambers and second by Alderman Chuck Short to go into Executive Session for the reasons listed on the agenda: 7:12

Moved by Alderman Jeremy Holley and second by Alderman Chuck Short that we approve the minutes of the Executive Session and that they are to remain close;
