Salukis Closeout Road Swing with a Win at Valpo

Southern Illinois used an 11-0 run late in the second half to secure its 12th Missouri Valley Conference win of the season with a 66-62 win on the road at Valparaiso.

With the win, SIU moves to 20-8 overall and 12-5 in conference action – the win marks the first 20-win season for SIU since the 2016-17 season.

It was a quiet game for nearly 32 minutes for Lance Jones, but he saved his best for last scoring five points in the decisive run to push Southern ahead for good.

Sophomore forward Clarence Rupert added a career-high 14 points as Southern was dominant in the paint throughout – finishing with 40 points near the basket.

SIU took command early scoring the first eight points of the contest thanks to the inside finishing from Rupert who had six of SIU's points. After taking a 12-4 lead, SIU would not score over the next five minutes while the Beacons reeled off the next eight points to tie the game with nine minutes left in the half forcing an SIU timeout.

Marcus Domask snapped a five-minute scoring drought with a 3-pointer to spark the Salukis one more. Southern would close the half on a 12-7 run to take a 27-19 lead into the locker room.

Valpo took its first lead with 6:01 left in the game on a slashing layup by Kobe King before SIU erupted for 11-straight points to close the game out.

Ben Krikke and King finished with a game-high 24 points each for Valpo.
