Alden-Hebron Community Consolidated Unit School District #19 Board of Education met Oct. 19.

Here are the minutes provided by the board:

President Norton called the regular meeting of the Board of Education of Alden-Hebron Community Consolidated Unit School District #19 to order at 7:01pm.

Roll Call

PRESENT: Mr. Norton, Mr. Winkelman, Mr. Eskridge, Mrs. Johnson

PRESENT REMOTE: Mrs. Smith (via Zoom)

ABSENT: Mr. Madsen, Mr. Berg

ALSO PRESENT:

Tiffany Elswick-Superintendent, Aaron Butler-MS/HS Principal, Eric Slocum-ES Principal, Katie Beck SSC, Cyndie Erckfritz-Transportation, Jim Hoss-B&G, Ray Stalker, Steve Fritsch

Correspondence

• FOIA: 10/3/22—Request for information regarding whether or not D19 has specific books in the Library, when they were acquired, and if and when they were removed from the Library. The request was satisfied on 10/5/22 with the help of Mrs. Geils.

Board Comments

Mr. Winkelman urged everyone to come out and support the student athletes at their sporting events. Friday is Senior Night for the football team.

Consent Agenda

The following items were reviewed under the Consent Agenda

Mr. Eskridge moved; Mr. Winkelman seconded to approve items A through D of the consent agenda with Item “E. Personnel Report” removed as there are no personnel updates at this time.

BUSINESS

ADMINISTRATION

Eric Slocum-ES Principal – as presented

Mr. Slocum added:

• The Elementary concert was well-attended last night.

• Thank you to the PTO for sponsoring the “Trunk or Treat” event at the ES on Friday, 10/14.

• The District-wide Veteran’s Day Committee met today.

• Shared the ES School Improvement Plan

Aaron Butler-MS/HS Principal – as presented

Mr. Butler added:

• The MS/HS will have a student teacher for second semester in the English Department

• Thank you to Mr. LeBaron, District IT Director for stepping in to take over some of the “Tech” tasks that Mr. Butler’s predecessor took care of regularly

• Shared the MS/HS School Improvement Plan

Mrs. Johnson motioned; Mr. Winkelman seconded to accept the ES SIP and the MS/HS SIP as presented Motion Carried

Mrs. Tiffany Elswick-Superintendent – as presented

Mrs. Elswick added:

• Mr. Berg suggested at the September BOE meeting that the Board meetings be held at the MS/HS building since the District Office has moved there—Board members agreed to meet at that location in November.

• Wold recommends District 19 accepts the bid from Carey Electric Contracting, LLC for upgrading the exterior lighting at the ES and the MS/HS for $42,353. The project has already been approved by the BOE and will be paid for with the Maintenance Grant which has matching funds from the State.

VILLAGE

Mrs. Smith attended the VOH meeting on 9/26/2022. Items discussed included:

• Payment of regular bills

• The Haunted Run 5K will be held on 10/29/22

• Trick or Treat will be Monday, 10/31/22 from 3-7pm

• New trustees were appointed: Shirley Correll, Candace Knaack, Dawn Milarski

• Linn-Hebron Cemetery fundraiser at Crandall’s on Monday, 11/7/222—including a raffle for 2 Bears vs. Packers tickets

TOWNSHIP

• Alden Township: No report

• Hebron Township: Mrs. Johnson attended the Hebron Township meeting (10-12-22). Items discussed:

➢ Payment of regular bills

➢ Township assessor reports home sales have been slow

➢ Seaman Road RR crossing improvement has been postponed until next year

➢ Working on an agreement between Linn Township and Hebron Township to make necessary improvements on State Line Road

FINANCE

Mrs. Elswick stated that the FY22 Audit went very well; there were no findings

Mr. Norton moved; Mr. Eskridge seconded to accept the FY22 Audit as presented.

AYES: Mr. Norton, Mr. Winkelman, Mrs. Smith (via Zoom), Mr. Eskridge, Mrs. Johnson

NAYS: None

ABSENT: Mr. Madsen, , Mr. Berg

PHYSICAL STRUCTURES/MAINTENANCE

Mr. Hoss added:

• In answer to Mrs. Johnson’s question—The new projectors in the classrooms are replacements

• Jensen’s submitted a proposal for replacement of the boiler chemical pot to complete the work on the ES boiler replacement

FACILITIES UPDATE

Mrs. Johnson stated that the Community Open House will be held in the MS/HS gym on Tuesday, October 25 at 6:00pm. There will be a presentation including the scope of work to be done should the referendum pass, followed by the community members being able to visit different stations where the Core Team will be set up to further explain all aspects of the referendum and the anticipated work. Tours of the building will be offered as well as childcare for those that need it.

She added that the canvassing went well on 10/15 and that the BOE members hope to do it again on 11/5.

TRANSPORTATION—as presented

In answer to Mr. Norton’s question, Mrs. Erckfritz stated that the District has postponed the purchase of a different bus, explaining that the manufactures have paused making buses with gasoline engines.

STUDENT SERVICES—as presented

Mrs. Beck added:

• The Birth to Three group is having a group connection at VonBergen’s tomorrow; they will also have a group connection on Wednesday, 10/26 during Parent/Teacher Conferences

• The Preschool program continues to get new students

• As of now, the State has not disclosed whether or not Districts will be getting grants for the Preschool or Birth to Three programs

FUTURE AGENDA ITEMS

• Mrs. Johnson: With the continued difficulty of finding parents willing to work in the Concession Stand, should the District consider allowing HS students to work, thereby allowing those students to accrue their needed Volunteer hours?

• Mrs. Johnson: Should the District schedule a BOE meeting for Wednesday, November 2? The consensus of the Board was agreeable to this and a meeting will be held on that date at 7:00pm

• Mr. Eskridge: The BOE needs to examine the mowing contract and discuss the high fuel surcharge

COMMUNICATIONS

Public Comments:

Staff Comments

• Mrs. Elswick thanked those of her staff for taking on some of the tasks involved with state reporting in an effort to streamline and reorganize the process

• Mrs. Eskridge stated that the students are very excited about being able to go on field trips again

Board Comments

• Mr. Eskridge invited the BOE members to attend the Veteran’s Day ceremony at the MS/HS on Friday, November 11. Breakfast will be served to the Veteran’s at 8:15; the program will commence at 9:00am

• Mr. Norton encouraged all to attend the Football game on Friday. It will be Senior Night and the weather looks to be beautiful—a perfect night for a game
