Alden-Hebron School District #19 Board of Education met Sept. 21.

Here are the minutes provided by the board:

President Norton called the regular meeting of the Board of Education of Alden-Hebron Community Consolidated Unit School District #19 to order at 7:00 p.m.

Roll Call

PRESENT: Mr. Norton, Mrs. Smith, Mr. Madsen, Mr. Eskridge, Mr. Berg, Mrs. Johnson 

ABSENT: Mr. Winkelman

ALSO PRESENT: Tiffany Elswick-Superintendent, Aaron Butler-MS/HS Principal, Eric Slocum-ES Principal, Katie Beck-SSC, Jim Hoss-Buildings and Grounds, Colleen Geils-Instructional Coach, Ray Stalker, Nick Ciccotosto

REMOTE: Pat Syens-Treasurer, Patti Peisert-ES Teacher

COMMUNICATIONS 

Public Comments

None

Mrs. Beck presented the proposed budget for FY23 to the BOE and those present for the meeting.

Mrs. Smith moved; Mr. Eskridge seconded to open the Public Hearing for the FY23 Budget at 7:28pm.

AYES: Mr. Norton, Mrs. Smith, Mr. Madsen, Mr. Eskridge, Mr. Berg, Mrs. Johnson, 

NAYS: None

ABSENT: Mr. Winkelman

Motion Carried

Mrs. Elswick stated that the proposed budget has been on display for at least 30 days in the District Office as required. Nobody has been in to see it. Mr. Norton invited those public comments regarding the budget or the presentation, to which there was no response.

Mrs. Smith moved; Mr. Madsen seconded to close the Public Hearing regarding the FY23 Budget at 7:33.

Mrs. Smith moved; Mr. Berg seconded to approve the consent agenda with Item “H. Personnel Report” removed as there were no personnel changes to report.

BUSINESS 

ADMINISTRATION 

Eric Slocum-ES Principal Report-as presented

Mr. Slocum added:

• All ES grades will be taking field trips this year

• PTO is sponsoring a “Trunk or Treat” event at the ES on Friday, 10/14, from 4:30-6:30pm 

• ES enjoyed a Spirit Week assembly on Friday, 9/16, organized by Ms. Prus and Ms. Foster and the 3-5 Student Council

Mr. Slocum and Mrs. Geils then presented the Instructional Coaching Model they have adopted. It is a student-centered model developed by Professor John Hattie after years of research. The model has been well-received by the faculty with very positive feedback.

Aaron Butler-MS/HS Principal Report-as presented

Mr. Butler added:

• School Spirit was great last week with Homecoming—Parents came in to decorate student lockers; Student Council came in to decorate the hallways; events were well-attended 

• He will host a Parent University event in October

• Expectations have been elevated as he wants students and staff to be proud of their test scores and feel comfortable sharing them with the public

Tiffany Elswick-Superintendent Report-as presented

Mrs. Elswick added:

• Homecoming week was fabulous across the District—the golf outing was great 

• Mrs. Beck did a great job with her Budget presentation; Mr. Slocum and Mrs. Geils did a great job with their Instructional Coaching presentation—thank you for both presentations 

• Admin will have SIP’s for the BOE in October

• State testing Data Presentations will be delivered at the November BOE meeting

VILLAGE

Mr. Smith stated that there has not been a Village of Hebron meeting since the last BOE meeting. She did reiterate that the VOH is short 3 Trustees since the resignation of some of their members. It is expected that there may be trustee appointments at the next Village meeting.

TOWNSHIP

Alden Township—Mr. Madsen attended the Alden Township meeting on 9/8/22. Items discussed included:

• Business as usual—payment of bills

• Constituent concern with logging trucks driving north on Knickerbocker Road causing damage—Township officials will be looking into this issue

Hebron Township—Mrs. Johnson attended the Hebron Township meeting. Items discussed included:

• Business as usual—payment of bills

• NICOR program introduced to help people pay their heating bills

• Cemetery

➢ Volunteer is creating a database of graves

➢ Consideration of making an exception to rules created by the Township after they took over administration of the cemetery—“grandfathering” in families that bought plots before the Township was involved

➢ Fundraiser at Crandall’s on Monday, 11/7/22

PHYSICAL STRUCTURES/MAINTENANCE-as presented

Mr. Hoss added that the Boiler project is completed at the ES. Jensen’s were great to work with. 

TRANSPORTATION-as presented

FACILITIES UPDATE

Mrs. Johnson provided the BOE members with an updated schedule of events for them to attend for referendum outreach. She encouraged members to review the calendar and to commit to attending events that they are available for.

Mr. Berg commented that the hope is that, as Election Day gets closer, the BOE members will also commit to going door-to-door to remind people to get out and vote and to deliver referendum information.

CURRICULUM AND POLICY

Mrs. Elswick stated that District 19 is taking the stance of opting out of the new Sex Education Curriculum. She shared that the BOE is not formally required to take action on the topic because the District does not have a comprehensive Sex Ed curriculum.

SPECIAL EDUCATION-SSC report as presented

Mrs. Beck added that three new preschoolers started this past Monday. She expects that the program will be full within the next month or so.

FUTURE AGENDA ITEMS

Mr. Berg suggested that since the District Office has moved to the MS/HS building, the venue for the BOE meetings should be moved to that building as well.

Staff Comments

Mrs. Elswick stated that she is proud of all 3 members of her Admin team. They have all been doing a great job with the start of the school year.

Board Comments

• Mr. Madsen stated that Mrs. Beck did a great job with the Budget presentation today and that it appears that the Admin team is doing great.

• Mr. Berg congratulated Mr. Slocum and Mrs. Geils on their collaboration for the Instructional Coaching model. He added that Homecoming was great and encouraged everyone to come out and support the student athletes

• Mrs. Smith thanked the evening’s presenters for their work

• Mrs. Johnson shared that it is great that parents are receiving positive phone calls about their students from teachers

• Mr. Norton thanked Mrs. Beck, Mr. Slocum, and Mrs. Geils for their presentations this evening

Mrs. Smith moved; Mr. Berg seconded to adjourn the meeting at 8:28pm. Motion carried.
