Men’s Rugby Opens Season with Close Setback to Marian

The McKendree men's rugby team opened their 2022-23 season with an afternoon contest this past Saturday at Marian University. The 15's game ended in a close loss for McKendree as the Knights outscored the Bearcats 17-14.

This past Saturday's match marked the first-ever 15's game for the McKendree men's rugby program under head coach Cameron Wyper.

In the first-ever meeting of the two teams, The Knights came out strong on offense, scoring all 17 of their points in the first 25 minutes of the game. However, the Bearcats would not back down as McKendree scored their first try just before halftime, courtesy of freshman Jermey McMichael (St. Louis, Mo.).

In the second half, McKendree rallied again with attacking play led by sophomore Dean Brits (Still Bay, South Africa/University of Rio Grande) to get McMichael his second try of the day. The Bearcats would have a chance for another try at the end of the game, but were unable to score at the Marian try line.

Brits controlled the conversions for the Bearcats, tallying two conversions to add four points to McKendree's 14 total points.

The Bearcats will continue their season on Saturday, Oct. 22 at Life University in Marietta, Ga.
