Rep. Patrick Windhorst visited the University of Illinois’ community garden, a collaborative effort with the Christian Outreach Program Emergency Food Pantry.
“We picked some tomatoes and stopped by the kids’ activity booth,” Windhorst wrote on Facebook. “The community garden benefits the COPE food pantry in Metropolis and they are looking for volunteers to help maintain the garden.”
COPE has been active in supporting its community.
In 2019, the organization received a $250 grant from the Save a Lot store in Metropolis. Then, the store was owned by Houchens Industries Inc.
Save a Lot stores participate Bags for a Brighter Holiday program, an effort to donate purchased foods. Layla Turner, a store manager, told Paducah Sun COPE has contributed to the bags.
“We’re humbled by the success of our Bags for a Brighter Holiday program this year, especially during such a challenging year for most,” Kenneth McGrath, Save a Lot’s CEO said in Paducah Sun in 2021. “We’ve really seen communities come together and support families in need, which is what this program is all about. It is a true representation of the generosity and support of each of our valued customers, and we can’t thank them enough for helping local families in need when it matters most.”
COPE Food Pantry has helped people in Massac County for more than 40 years.
Metropolis Planet wrote the food pantry started in an elementary school in the late 1970s.
“Anything we get donated, we don’t have to buy,” COPE President Gene Tilker said to Metropolis Planet. “If it were not for the local churches, COPE wouldn't be able to stay open.”
Windhorst was first elected to the Illinois House in 2018. A Republican, their legislative experience includes serving on the Restorative Justice Committee and Judiciary - Criminal. Windhorst is a state representative who resides in Metropolis, according to the Illinois House.
