Illinois State Sen. Terri Bryant (R-Murphysboro) believed there could be future state leaders among the group of high school students that participated in her most recent Youth Advisory Council.

Bryant celebrated the students in a May 18 tweet

"This won't be the last time you see the young people from my Youth Advisory Council," Bryant wrote in the tweet. "I believe one or more of this crew will be our future elected officials."

Bryant previously hosted a Youth Advisory Council session at SIU Carbondale back in December. According to Metro East Sun, the students chosen to participate were nominated by their schools for their shown interest in government and public service.

House Bill 0594 created the Youth Advisory Council. The legislation was passed on November 30, 2021. The goal of the bill was to generate communication between Illinois' young people and connect them with the various branches of state government while learning about the issues, interests, and needs that are important to teenagers.

Under the bill, the Advisory Board would include four lawmakers, two from each chamber. The Speaker of the House, House Minority Leader, Senate President, and Senate Minority Leader would each pick someone to sit on the board and facilitate the functions of the Council, according to The Illinois General Assembly website.
