The baseball team completed their three-game sweep over Blackburn on Monday with a 5-4 win. The Panthers received significant production from the bottom of the batting order with six hits and four RBI from the last four positions in the lineup.
No. 8 hitter Tanner Gerdes and No. 9 batter Zach Ury led GU with identical 2-for-4 efforts with a double, a run scored, and an RBI.
Starting pitcher Luke Fleener recorded his second conference win of the season with eight innings on the mound. He gave up four runs, two earned, on seven hits and two walks with four strikeouts. Trent Harris pitched an efficient ninth inning for his third save.
The Panthers fell behind 1-0 after the first inning and 3-0 after the top of the second.
In GU's half of the second inning at bat, the Panthers received an RBI double from Gerdes.
In the fourth inning, GU tied the score at 3-all with an RBI double from Ury. Ury later scored when the shortstop committed a fielding error during Drew Frey's at bat.
Greenville scored in the bottom of the fifth after an RBI groundout from Thomas Dowell and an RBI single by Dustin Sutton.
Blackburn cut the deficit to one in the top of the seventh.
The Panthers (12-11, 4-2 SLIAC) moved into second place in the SLIAC standings with the win. They host first place Fontbonne in a three-game set on Friday and Saturday.
