State Rep. Chris Bos (R-Lake Zurich) recently introduced three measures in an effort to freeze the gas tax and provide property tax relief.
A release issued by the lawmaker’s office on Jan. 31 said the bills are House Bill 5215, House Bill 4834, and House Bill 5217.
Bos took to Twitter to announce his efforts, as well as make a slight rebuke toward Democratic Gov. J.B. Pritzker.
“This has been (a) fight for me since day [one]!” he said in a tweet. “Glad to see the Governor finally agrees, even if it’s just a campaign stunt after increasing taxes.”
The Illinois General Assembly’s website explains that HB 5215 would amend the Motor Fuel Tax Law to freeze the tax rate for two years, as well as suspend the Consumer Price Index adjustment.
According to Bos’ office, HB 5215 was in the hands of the House Revenue and Finance Committee as of Feb. 9.
Currently assigned to the House Revenue & Finance Committee, HB 4834 would extend the community stabilization assessment freeze pilot program through June 30, 2039, according to the GA’s website.
The program is supposed to expire on June 30, 2029.
The legislation also would eliminate the requirement that the community stabilization assessment freeze pilot program pertains only to parcels in a specific area, the bill’s synopsis explained.
HB 5215 would have the state Department of Revenue's sales ratio determine the fair cash value of property for half a decade preceding the assessment year, the GA’s website said.
As of Feb. 9, the legislation was with the House Revenue and Finance Committee.
“High taxes should never be the reason a family can’t make ends meet and I hope my fellow members of the General Assembly will help advance these bills to ensure families can keep more of their hard-earned money in their pockets,” Bos said in the release.
