Dongola Unit School #66 Board of Education met Sept. 28.

Here are the minutes provided by the board:

Phil Miller called the Regular Board of Education Meeting to order at 6:32 p.m.

3. PUBLIC COMMENT 

Joy Aden: Has a daughter who is a freshman. Her grade school years were awesome. Last year is when she started to see things slipping. Math is primarily the IXL program. Not a lot of examples are given. There are two students that needed help and they emailed the teacher and were told to "Google it". Sever days later the students received an answer back on how to complete the problems. The students are unsure of when assignments are due. Another concern she has is that there are not a lot of classes from which to choose in math or history. She has contacted recent high school graduates and they said they are behind and said moving on was harder than it should've been. She also provided website info on school rankings. They rank from 1-10. Several schools in our area range from 4/10 to 2/10. Our school ranked 1/10. She also showed concern that kids are leaving this school in "droves" and going to other schools. She said she wants to be proud of our school. She also feels like masks are more important than our education. After Joy was finished talking before the public comment ended she added: That how the children are talked to is also an issue. 

Amy Mize: She wanted to start out with saying that she has a love for this school. If her husband was not an engineer they would not be able to figure the math out. She would love to volunteer her time if needed. She said her and several others frustration is that they don't want to pull their kids, they love this school. Her child rides the bus for 12 hours in the morning and has bladder issues. She also does not get to use the bathroom enough. Amy then asked if the school was going to fix only having two school buses. 

Dr. Maginel discussed that during public comment the board does not interact with the person who is addressing the board but that she did want to let her know that the bus driver and several other positions are open and have been posted but we have not received any interest in the positions. Dr. Maginel also stated that she could absolutely volunteer but would have to undergo a background check and be vaccinated or receive weekly covid tests to do so. 

Amy then informed the board that she has the option to take her child to Anna but does not want to.
