City of Metropolis City Council Met April 26.

The regular meeting of the City Council, City of Metropolis, Illinois was held at 7:00 p.m. in Council Chambers of City Hall at 106 West 5th Street, Metropolis, Illinois. Upon roll call the following Aldermen were present: Alderman Jeremy Holley, Al Wagner, Chad Lewis, Don Canada, John Taylor and Darryl Neill, Mike Hall, Chuck Short, City Clerk Jan Adams, Mayor William McDaniel, Corporate Counsel Rick Abell and concerned citizens of Metropolis.

RECOGNITION OF GUESTS:
Guests came to recognize Mayor McDaniel’s final meeting after giving 20 years of elected service to the city of Metropolis. Executive director of the Illinois Municipal League, Brad Cole, offered his congratulations from the staff and members of the IML board. He wished him well on his retirement, congratulated the council and new mayor and extended an invitation to continue to work together. Stoney Barrett, public works director, and Deneal Bullock, executive secretary, presented Mayor McDaniel with a gift on behalf of the city of Metropolis employees. Several employees were present giving thanks to the Mayor for taking a chance on them and giving them the opportunity to work for the city of Metropolis. The Mayor emphasized how proud he is of his employees and the decisions the council makes to better our community. He also expressed his gratitude to his wife and family as well as corporate counsel, Rick Abell. He recognized Ward 1 Alderman Mike Hall and Ward 2 Alderman John Taylor for their years of service. Both were appointed to their positions and neither ran for re-election.

The ribbon cutting & grand opening for Shawnee Public Transportation will be Thursday, April 29th between the hours of 10 am and 2pm at the Industrial Park;
Thrive will have their grand opening ceremony May 5th, at 11am. CORPORATE COUNSEL:
Corporate Counsel awarded Lily Conkle, a senior at Massac County High School, a certificate from the Illinois Municipal Utilities Association for her 500- word energy related essay. The city matched the scholarship amount giving her $2000.00 towards her college education. She is the city’s third IMUA scholarship winner.
FINANCIAL REPORT:
Moved by Alderman Jeremy Holley and second by Alderman Chad Lewis to approve the Finance Report be received and approved and that the orders be drawn on the Treasurer for the different amounts mentioned therein and that the Mayor and the City Clerk be authorized to make necessary arrangements for payment of current Salaries, Payroll and Contract bills;
