Metropolis Police Department issued the following announcement on May. 10. 

From the Office of the Director of Public Safety: Arrest Summary, May 1-8, 2021;

May 1, 2021

Metropolis Officers arrested Joshua R. Goines,40, homeless in the 200 block of W. 10th St. Goines was wanted on numerous warrants issued by Massac County. Warrants were for possession of Meth, fleeing/eluding police (2) and driving while license revoked. Goines was lodged in the Massac County Detention Center.

Metropolis Officers were called to Big John’s for a theft. Officers learned that the victim’s purse was stolen and it was captured on video. Officers viewed the video and also watched the offender leave in a black Scion vehicle. A computer check on the Scion was made and a Metropolis Sergeant went to the address listed. The vehicle was not at the residence however, the Sergeant observed the vehicle and the driver matched the description of the thief. A traffic stop was conducted near the sports park on Metropolis Street. The thief was identified as Lisa M Johnston, 42, Metropolis. She at first denied the theft however, when confronted with video evidence she admitted to taking the purse and throwing it away in a restroom at Ft Massac State Park. The purse was recovered except that $200 cash was missing. Johnston was charged with the theft and a search revealed that she was in possession of Meth. Johnston was also charged with possession of Methamphetamine and lodged in the Massac County Detention Center.

May 3, 2021

A Metropolis Sergeant stopped a green Nissan on I-24 at exit 37. The Sergeant observed that the vehicle was straddling the center line and speeding. A computer check on the driver, Eric Austin Thompson,22, Cassatt, SC revealed that his drivers license was suspended. Thompson was arrested and lodged in the Massac County Detention Center.

Metropolis Officers were called to a domestic disturbance at a residence in the 400 block of Filmore. Upon arrival and speaking with the victim, Officers learned that Chad M. Click, 24, Metropolis had kicked a broom out of her hand and spit on her. She signed complaints for domestic battery. Click was arrested. A search found that he had drug paraphernalia and Meth on him. Click was charged with domestic battery, possession of Methamphetamine and possession of drug paraphernalia. Click was lodged in the Massac County Detention Center.

May 4, 2021

Metropolis Police responded along with Metropolis Fire to a reported fire at the Country Village Apartments at 40 Lois Ln. Upon arrival, smoke was observed coming from the front of the building. A Massac County Deputy had arrived first on the scene and put the fire out with a fire extinguisher. The fire had started in a trash can inside the laundry room. Officers and firemen observed and met with Joni Yuvette Smith, 62 who lives in one of the apartments. Smith kept yelling and getting in the way and was coughing from the smoke. She was treated and released by ambulance personnel at the scene. Smith was very irrational; however, she was not deemed to be a threat. She was finally convinced to stay in her apartment. Fire and police remained on the scene for about an hour venting the area with fresh air and conducting the investigation. The scene was turned over to the building management. Approximately an hour later, police were called back. Management stated that Smith was out of control. Upon arrival, officers learned that Smith was pounding on doors and threatening residents. Complaints were signed for disorderly conduct. Smith was taken to the Massac County Detention Center. Massac Mental Health was notified as well to conduct an assessment.

Metropolis Officers received a call from the SuperBowl Bowling Alley on E. 8th St. Officers were advised that they asked a subject to leave and he got into his truck and was doing burnouts and donuts in the parking lot. As the call was given out, a Massac County Deputy arrived and observed the vehicle doing donuts behind plaza tire near the storage units. A traffic stop was initiated and the driver attempted to flee on foot. Orland Puente,43, Mayfield KY was quickly caught. Puente was charged with disorderly conduct and reckless driving. He was lodged in the Massac County Detention Center.

May 5, 2021

Officers received a 911 call from Tony R Burchardi,42, at his residence in the 18800 block of North Ave. in reference to a female who refused to leave his residence. Upon arrival, Officers learned that the female had been living at the home for over a month. The eviction process was explained and officers departed. Approximately 20 minutes later officers received another 911 call from Burchardi stating that the female was now violent and struck him. Upon arrival, Offices observed both of them sitting peacefully. Burchardi stated the he still wanted her to leave. When asked about the 911 call, he admitted that he made the story up because he wanted her gone. Burchardi was arrested for a felony count of disorderly conduct and lodged in the Massac County Detention Center.

Metropolis Officers were called to a residence in the 200 block of W. 18th. Upon arrival, the victim advised that she had been chasing her dog which had broke free. Upon retrieving the dog and returning home, a male driving a white pick-up truck pulling a camo-colored trailer stopped and approached her. During the brief conversation, he stated that she needed a hug. The victim advised she did not need a hug, however, he proceeded to hug her anyway. He then touched her inappropriately on her buttocks and pubic area. A Metropolis Sergeant searched the area and located the vehicle. The owner of the vehicle matched the description of the offender. The victim identified Larry W. Burris,69, Metropolis in a photo line-up. Burris was charged with criminal sexual abuse and lodged in the Massac County Detention Center. Investigation is on-going.

The Metropolis Police Chief observed a black mini-bike traveling northbound on US 45 at I-24. The min-bike was not street legal. (no lights, registration, etc.) A traffic stop was conducted and a compute check revealed that Kenneth C. Bryant,65, Metropolis had a suspended driver’s license. Bryant was transported to the Metropolis Police Dept for processing. He was charged with driving while suspended, no valid registration and operation of an uninsured motor vehicle. He was released on bond.

May 8, 2021

A Metropolis Officer stopped a red Chevrolet Pick-up truck on US 45 & Devers Rd. The registration on the pick-up truck came back as cancelled. A computer check on the driver, Adam J. Brown, 38, Karnak showed that he was wanted on a warrant. The warrant was issued by Pope County, IL for failure to appear-Operation of an uninsured motor vehicle. A search revealed a tin container containing Meth. Brown was charged with operation of a motor vehicle with cancelled registration, operation of an uninsured motor vehicle, possession of Methamphetamine and the warrant. Brown was lodged in the Massac County Detention Center.

The preceding information pertains to arrests made by the Metropolis Police Department. These arrests are made on the basis of probable cause and all arrestees are presumed innocent until proven guilty.
