Rep. David Friess released a statement regarding Gov. J.B. Pritzker’s plan to decouple Illinois from the federal CARES Act.
Friess stated that he has grave concern about how the governor’s plan would impact small businesses, especially in light of how the COVID pandemic has been hurting them since it started.
“One of my legislative priorities is to support small business; a move like this could have widespread ramifications. We need to know the details behind the governor's thinking,” Friess said.
Friess then stressed Illinois' decreasing population.
“Look, people are leaving Illinois in droves. We cannot let that trend continue. I fear that implementing what could amount to a billion-dollar tax on our small business community will only fuel that trend. We must start being responsible stewards of our economy,” Friess concluded.
Signed into law in March, the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act has provided small businesses relief by allowing them to deduct additional losses in 2020.
While Pritzker’s attempt during the lame-duck session to push legislation to decouple Illinois from the relief failed, he asked the lawmakers to reconsider the bill during the current session before taxes are due.
