It is important to start encouraging girls still in their youth to have interest in the STEM fields | Stock Photo
Southern Illinois University-Carbondale has come to an agreement with Girls Incorporated of St. Louis to give mentoring and education opportunities, scholarships and summer camps to middle and high school students.
The opportunities will help encourage these students to pursue careers in the STEM field, according to a press release from Southern Illinois University Carbondale.
“We are excited about our partnership with Girls Inc.,” Chancellor Austin Lane said in the press release. “We want to provide opportunities for women in STEM and other are as in leadership and bridge any gaps for young women who want to attain a first-rate university education where they will receive hands-on learning and personal attention.”
STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics.

Science and engineering careers throughout the nation are made up of 29% of women. Providing these opportunities to girls will help encourage them to enter STEM careers.
“Chancellor Lane takes a personal interest in the students’ success and creates a community that is supportive and that of ‘belonging,’” Cheryl Jones, the St. Louis organization’s president and CEO said in the press release. “It is very much the approach that we have here at Girls Inc., of inspiring all girls to be strong, smart and bold.”
