City of Metropolis City Council met Aug. 24.

Here is the minutes provided by the council:

The regular meeting of the City Council, City of Metropolis, Illinois was held at 7:00 p.m., in Council Chambers of City Hall at 106 West 5th Street, Metropolis, Illinois. Upon roll call the following Aldermen were present: Alderman Jeremy Holley, Don Canada, John Taylor and Darryl Neill, Al Wagner, Mike Hall, Chuck Short, City Clerk Jan Adams, Mayor William McDaniel, Corporate Counsel Rick Abell and concerned citizens of Metropolis. Alderman Chad Lewis was absent.

Moved by Alderman Mike Hall and second by Alderman Darryl Neill to

approve the minutes of the previous meeting held on 8-10-2020 as presented;

MAYOR’S REPORT:

The annual Lion’s Club Labor Day parade has been canceled due to COVID19. We are at a time of uncertainty and want to do the right thing to keep our residents safe. We are to set examples and do not feel we can maintain social distancing commented the Mayor.

Moved by Alderman Chuck Short and second by Alderman Mike Hall to accept the purchase of 100 ton of salt at $67.00 per ton from Compass Minerals;

Jerry Caudle is retiring after 25 plus years of service with the City of Metropolis. We want to wish him well and thank him for his many years of commitment at the Airport. Wayne and Kay Helm will be the new managers and look forward to working with them.

Moved by Alderman Chuck Short and second by Alderman Al Wagner to authorize the Mayor to hire a manager for the Airport;

ORDINANCE COMMITTEE:

Moved by Alderman Chuck Short and second by Alderman Jeremy Holley to adopt a motion to reset public hearing on the proposed Appropriation Ordinance for Monday, September 14th, 2020 at 6:30 p.m. in the City Council chambers and to publish notice of the same;

POLICE DEPARTMENT:

Moved by Alderman Chuck Short and second by Alderman Don Canada to accept the resignation of firefighter Colton Griffey effective 8/31/2020, and hire the next one from the eligibility list effective 9/01/2020 with that individual to begin the academy on 9/14/2020;

FINANCIAL REPORT:

Moved by Alderman Mike Hall and second by Alderman Darryl Neill to approve the Finance Report be received and approved and that the orders be drawn on the Treasurer for the different amounts mentioned therein and that the Mayor and the City Clerk be authorized to make necessary arrangements for payment of current Salaries, Payroll and Contract bills;
