Metropolis FD responds to 49 fires in 2018

Metropolis Fire District responded to 80 calls in 2018 - 29 percent more than the previous year, according to data from the National Fire Incident Reporting System.

The calls in Metropolis included 49 fires - 30 structure fires, seven vehicle fires and 12 other fires. The fire department also responded to two calls for ruptures, explosions or overheating.

In all, the department saw $775,701 in fire loss - or about $15,831 per fire.

The department also received 29 false calls, including two malicious calls and 27 other false calls.

The calls resulted in one civilian fire-related injury and one civilian fire-related death.

The Metropolis Firefighters Pension Fund, which has 10 active employees and seven retired or inactive employees, was $41,389 positive as of June 2017, according to the fund's mandated filings with the Illinois Department of Insurance. That amounts to $1,119 for every fire in 2017.
