A recent grand jury subpoena indicates the federal government is taking a broad look at Illinois Speaker of the House Michael Madigan’s (D-Dist. 22) political relationships and activities.
Expanding on implications that Madigan is tied to a criminal bribery investigation into electrical company Commonwealth Edison (ComEd), the subpoena requests 12 documents related to the Speaker’s communications with friends, fellow politicians, and even large corporations beyond ComEd.
The reach of the subpoena includes not only Madigan’s actions as House speaker, but raises questions of favors or assistance he may have offered to others through his law firm, a release issued on Illinois Policy said.
Madigan has already faced calls from within his own party to step down from his position as speaker. The ties and implications with ComEd should lead to Madigan not only resigning as speaker, but also as Illinois Democratic Party chairman, regardless of whether he faces criminal charges, state Sen. Melinda Bush (D-Dist. 31) said in the release.
