Metropolis Police Department issued the following announcement on July 7.

July 1, 2020
A Metropolis Sergeant observed a grey Durango pull onto W. 10th from the Family Dollar Store. The sergeant recognized the driver as Paul C. McClamma,65, Metropolis. The sergeant was aware that McClamma had a suspended driver’s license. A computer check confirmed the suspension. A traffic stop was conducted at W. 10th and Johnson. McClamma was arrested and taken to the Metropolis Police Department for processing. McClamma was released on bond.
July 2, 2020
Metropolis Officers were called to the Holiday Inn for a suspicious person. Prior to their arrival, the subjects left in a red Corvette. A Metropolis Detective located the vehicle as it was entering I-24 eastbound. The Detective clocked the vehicle doing 82 in a posted 70 mph zone. A traffic stop was conducted. A computer check on the driver, Scott G Hitterman,57, Metropolis showed his driver’s license to be suspended. Hitterman had no proof of insurance. Hitterman was arrested and charged with driving while license suspended, operation of an uninsured motor vehicle and speeding. He was released on bond.
July 3, 2020
At approximately 2:00 am, Metropolis Officers were called to the 200 block of W. 9th for a subject screaming and yelling causing a disturbance. Offices observed the front door of a residence open and upon checking learned that Kenneth L Mitchell,39, Metropolis was inside the residence. He was found hiding in a bedroom. Mitchell has an order of protection prohibiting him from being in this area. As he was taken into custody, he again started yelling and screaming and causing a disturbance. Mitchell was charged with Violation of an order of protection and disorderly conduct. Mitchell was lodged in the Massac County Detention Center.
An off-duty Metropolis Sergeant observed a gray Durango on E. 5th St heading eastbound. He recognized the vehicle and driver as the one he arrested a July 1st for suspended license. The on-duty Sergeant observed the vehicle as it turned onto Pullen Rd. A traffic stop was conducted. Paul C. McClamma,65, Metropolis was arrested and charged with driving while license suspended. McClamma was released on bond.
July 4, 2020
At 5:00 am, A Metropolis Officer observed a gray Chevrolet Pick-up truck enter the sport’s Park on Metropolis Street in a reckless manner. He then observed the vehicle doing “donuts” in the parking lot. The vehicle then sped off onto 19th St and onto Old Marion Rd. The driver lost control and went into the ditch. The officer activated his emergency lights. The driver sped off and turned off its headlights. A pursuit ensued. The driver turned onto E/B Massac Creek Rd, to Gurley Rd. he then disobeyed the stop sign and turned south on Devers. The vehicle traveled on the wrong side of the road at high rates of speed. At US 45, the driver went into the wrong lane passing vehicles then turned South onto US 45, turned onto Unity School Rd where speeds reached 100 mph. the officer then lost sight of the vehicle a few miles down the road. As assisting officers checked the area, a Metropolis Sergeant located the vehicle off Holman Lake Rd. The vehicle crashed upside down in Holman Lake. The driver, a 16-year-old male from Brookport, IL was taken into custody. EMS was called as a precaution. As he was being examined by the ambulance crew, He again tried to flee. He was recaptured and taken to the Massac Memorial Hospital for examination. The 16-year-old was charged with reckless driving, illegal screeching/squealing of tires, aggravated attempted fleeing to elude and other traffic charges. He was also charged with violation of an order of protection. The juvenile was released on bond. Massac County Sheriff’s Deputies also assisted in this incident.
The preceding information pertains to arrests made by the Metropolis Police Department. These arrests are made on the basis of probable cause and all arrestees are presumed innocent until proven guilty.
