City of Metropolis City Council met May 26.

Here is the minutes provided by the council:

The regular meeting of the City Council, City of Metropolis, Illinois was held at 7:00 p.m. in Council Chambers of City Hall at 106 West 5th Street, Metropolis, Illinois. Upon roll call the following Aldermen were present: Alderman Jeremy Holley, Don Canada, Chad Lewis, John Taylor and Darryl Neill, Al Wagner, Mike Hall, Chuck Short, City Clerk Jan Adams, Mayor William McDaniel, Corporate Counsel Rick Abell and concerned citizens of Metropolis.

Moved by Alderman Mike Hall and second by Alderman Chuck Short to approve the minutes of the previous meeting held on 5-11-2020 as presented;

MAYOR’S REPORT:

Spring Clean Up weeks are scheduled for the weeks of June 1st and June 8th.

Items are to be placed at your normal trash pick-up point. For more information please call the Mayor’s office at 618-524-4016.

The 2011 flood FEMA rebate money came through in the amount of $53,000. The City fronted the money during the buyouts of damaged properties.

The pool was scheduled open Memorial Day weekend but canceled due to COVID-19. The concrete and gutter work has been completed and painting will now begin. The Splash Park completion date is July 4th, 2020 but it’s not likely to open due the pandemic.

The Governor has announced expanded plans for re-opening by permitting bars and restaurants to provide outdoor dining. The City has assisted these local restaurants/bars by creating outdoor areas until they are allowed to open to full service.

Moved by Alderman Al Wagner and second by Alderman Chuck Short to make a motion to Adopt a Resolution 2020-04 authorizing the Mayor to provide additional outdoor spaces to assist bars and restaurants and other forms of public assistance;

CORPORATE COUNSEL:

A Public Hearing was held this evening at 5:30 pm to discuss and consider the City’s proposed Downstate Small Business Stabilization Program grant. Several businesses applied for the economic development project in the amount of $25,000. The grant application will be submitted May 27th, 2020 to the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity, Office of Community Development. The grants are offered for the urgent needs of the business due to the COVID-19 emergency.
