The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) recently announced that on June 2 it gave nearly $400 million in grant funding to many law enforcement agencies, including the Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS), COPS Hiring Programs and CHP.
Funding awards were granted to the City of Anna, along with 596 additional law enforcement agencies across the country. The funding will allow the Anna to employ additional full-time law enforcement professionals.
Additionally, Anna has been awarded a three-year, $125,000 grant to hire a much-needed school resource officer.
The COPS Hiring Programs aim to reduce crime and advance public-safety awareness through community policing. The programs do this by providing funding used for hiring career police officers.
The CHP programs provide funding to state and local law-enforcement professionals to improve local policing tactics. Moreover, the CHP programs help law-enforcement agencies keep sufficient sworn personnel levels that professionals say promote safe community standards.
The funding of the programs were temporarily halted in the spring of 2018 because a nationwide injunction was imposed, but it was lifted earlier this year.
In a recent news release, Anna officials summarized that its application centered around school-based policing. Officials also included a plan that incorporates a school resource officer working at Anna-Jonesboro Community High School and Anna School in District 37.
Forty-three percent of the awards were announced on June 2. In addition to the school-based policing, funding will focus on the violent crime that officials say are plaguing the community.
Additionally, funding will go toward building trust and respect for law-enforcement officials in the community.
