As COVID-19 continues to spread and medical equipment is running low, hospitals in Illinois are providing guidelines for those who want to donate personal protective equipment.
According to The Southern Illinoisan, Southern Illinois Hospitals PPE guidelines follow those of the Centers for Disease Control, the World Health Organization and the Illinois Department of Public Health.
As of May 9, Illinois reported 73,760 confirmed cases of the coronavirus, including 3,241 deaths.
While PPE is running low, Southern Illinois Hospitals has issued general guidelines to the public about donations of protective equipment, including fabric face masks.
Currently, Southern Illinois Hospitals is accepting homemade fabric face masks — without interfacing — as well as commercially manufactured masks, goggles with full eye protection, and plastic face shields. These donations can be accepted Monday through Friday at the Southern Illinois Hospitals Corporate Office entrance on the southeast side of University Mall in Carbondale.
Those interested in donating N95 masks, surgical masks and isolation gowns can get more information at 618-899-2512.
Southern Illinois Hospitals President and CEO Rex Budde issued a statement on the virus and the outpouring of generosity from the public.
“While COVID-19 has changed our lives on a level unseen in many of our lifetimes, it has not changed the willing, community spirit and regional collaboration that has seen us through tough times in the past,” Budde said. "On behalf of SIH, thank you for your generosity and desire to help our providers, nurses and staff on the front lines."
