With schools still closed, teachers and staff from two school districts have a parade for students.

Although students are not in their classrooms, teachers and other staff members at two Illinois schools let students know they are keeping them in mind.

In Illinois, students and teachers may not be reunited until May after Gov. J.B. Pritzker extended the stay-at-home order until April 30 in an attempt to slow the spread of the novel coronavirus.

Members of the teaching staff and other staff members from Unity and Brockport elementary schools got in their cars and had a parade around town – to let their students know they cared, Metropolis Planet reported. They decorated their vehicles with signs after and drove around, honking and waving to their students. The sheriff’s department escorted the parades.

“I think during this time of separation, the students and staff need to see each other. We need more positive things for our students right now," Brooke Durham, principal at Unity and Brockport told Metropolis Planet. "The staff misses them terribly. This is a way we can show our students that we care and we’re thinking about them during this difficult time.”

Statewide schools began remote learning on March 17 using the internet and packets of work, but both of the Massac County school districts were doing this already.

Massac Unit District One Superintendent Jason Hayes and Vickie Artman, superintendent of Joppa-Maple Grove Unit #38 outlined their priorities during the school shutdown. They include feeding and caring for the students and the community; commuicate clearly and share organized messages with staff, students and community; and provide a continuity of learning for students in the state, the Metropolis Planet reported.
