Union County State's Attorney issued the following announcement on Dec. 16.
Special Prosecutor, Matt Goetten, in and for Union County, Illinois and Union County Sheriff Scott Harvel announced today that William P. Wasmund (DOB 10-28-1970) of 1510 Hyland Road, Chester, Illinois has been sentenced to thirty (30) years in the Illinois Department of Corrections on one (1) count of First Degree Murder, a Class M Felony. Wasmund will also serve a three (3) year Mandatory Supervised Release.
Wasmund was found guilty in September 2019 after a four day jury trial. Wasmund was arrested in February 2019 by Union County Sheriff’s Deputies following an investigation into the death of Jeffery A. Spicer (DOB 09-13-1965) of Murphysboro. Spicer was found dead along the highway at 7625 State Route 3 North in rural Union County on September 16, 2018. Evidence presented at trial showed that Wasmund set a shotgun with a trigger set to fire when the door of a shed opened knowing that such act created a strong probability of death or great bodily harm to any person opening the door of the shed. The shed was located at the 7625 State Route 3 North property.
The case was investigated by the Union County Sheriff’s Office with assistance from the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office, Illinois State Police Crime Scene, Carbondale Police / SIUC Police Bomb Squad, Illinois Secretary of State Police Bomb Squad and the Union County Coroner’s Office.
