Metropolis Police Department issued the following announcement on Dec. 17.

From the Office of the Director of Public Safety: Arrest Summary, December 8-14, 2019;

December 8, 2019

Rebecca M. Williams,31, Golconda was arrested in the 1000 block of E. 8th St. Williams was wanted on a warrant. The warrant was issued by Pope County IL for failure to appear. Williams was lodged in the Massac County Detention Center.

December 9, 2019

On Dec 7th, Metropolis Police initiated a theft investigation. The victim had left her purse at the Hardee’s and it was stolen. Upon viewing surveillance tape, Officers observed a subject they recognized as Babetta S Cole,46, Metropolis take the purse and then leave with it. Officers went to Cole’s residence and asked her about the incident. Cole admitted to taking the purse. Officers were able to recover the purse and most of the contents. Cole was charged with theft and lodged at the Massac County Detention Center.

December 12, 2019

Metropolis Officers were called to Casey’s for a theft. Upon arrival, Officers met with the victim who stated that his wallet was stolen after it had fallen onto the floor inside the store. Officers viewed video and recognized the person who picked up the wallet and did not return it. Officers recognized the offender as Jeffery S Garrett,55, Metropolis. Garrett was located outside his home and he was still in possession of the wallet There was $150.00 missing from the wallet. Garrett was arrested for theft and lodged in the Massac County Detention Center.

While on patrol, a Metropolis Officer was passing by Hope Unlimited (multiple theft reports have been taken there do to people stealing items from the donation boxes) and observed a vehicle parked in the lot and a subject halfway inside one of the donation boxes. The officer turned around in an attempt to see what the subjects were up too, when they pulled away. A computer check revealed that the vehicle had an expired registration sticker. A traffic stop was conducted, and the driver could not provide proof of insurance. The officer recognized the front seat passenger as the one inside the donation box. She was identified as Rebecca Pender, 44, Metropolis. The officer also observed some plastic bags in the vehicle similar to the ones he saw next to the donation box. Pender admitted to stealing the items from the box. She was arrested for theft and a search revealed a meth pipe. She was also charged with possession of drug paraphernalia. Pender was lodged in the Massac County Detention Center. The rear seat passenger, Vick L. Barrett, 41, Metropolis was arrested for possession of Meth, possession of Meth with the intent to deliver, and possession of a controlled substance (Alprazolam). Since Barrett was on parole, the IL Dept of Corrections was notified, and they issued a warrant for parole violation. Barrett was lodged in the Massac County Detention Center. The driver of the vehicle, Anthony Pender,47, Metropolis, was issued citations for expired registration and operation of an uninsured motor vehicle and released.

The preceding information pertains to arrests made by the Metropolis Police Department. These arrests are made on the basis of probable cause and all arrestees are presumed innocent until proven guilty.
