SOUTHERN SEVEN HEALTH DEPARTMENT: "Early Findings of FIT Testing in Region"

Healthnews

Southern Seven Health Department issued the following announcement on Dec. 3.

The Fecal Immunochemical Test (FIT) is a screening test for colon cancer. As part of an ongoing commitment to provide for the health of residents of Southern Illinois, we began offering FIT kits in early September of this year, and startling results are beginning to come in.

The current positivity rate for samples returned is 32%. The national average positivity rate is 7-12%.

FIT kits are for anyone age 50 or older who hasn't had a colonoscopy in the last 10 years. This highly sensitive, take home test detects blood in the stool, which may be an indicator of colon cancer.

FIT does not replace a colonoscopy; it is an option for colorectal cancer screening.
