City of Anna issued the following announcement on Sept. 5.

The not-for-profit group, Honor Wreaths for Veterans and Wreaths Across America is asking for help to ensure fallen veterans are remembered and honored this Christmas.

Each December, on National Wreaths Across America Day, the mission to Remember, Honor and Teach is carried out locally through a wreath-laying ceremony at Mounds National Cemetery. The City of Anna Cemetery is proud to take part in this years ceremony on December 14, 2019 at noon.

The wreath-laying ceremony is not purely for the decoration of graves but is done in the remembrance of the lives of the brave soldiers at rest. The organization believes that a person dies twice: once when they take their final breath, and later, the last time their name is spoken. Therefore, volunteers are asked to say the name of the veteran and take a moment to thank them for their service to our country as they place the wreath on the grave. This small act is meant to keep the memory of the veterans alive.

Honor Wreaths for Veterans and Wreaths Across America are 501c3 charities. A donation of $15 pays for one wreath. 100% of your donation goes to the purchase of wreaths.

For more information or to make a donation online click here for Honor Wreaths for Veterans or click here for Wreaths Across America. The City of Anna’s location name is Anna IL Cemetery and our location ID is ILAILA.

If you would like to mail a donation, send to 1212 Garfield St., Marion, IL 62959, payable to Honor Wreaths For Veterans. For questions please contact Martha Ann Webb, Location Coordinator, at 833-5717. The deadline to submit a donation is December 2, 2019.
