Anna Jonesboro Community High School District 81 Board met February 11.

The Anna-Jonesboro Community High School held its regular meeting on February 11, 2019. Upon roll call at 6:00 p.m. the following members were present: Dr. Reach, Mr. Hughey, Dr. Blakely, and Mrs. Boget. Mr. McGrath arrived at 6:05. Also present was Superintendent Wright, Mr. Finders, and Principal Brett Detering.
On motion by Dr. Reach and seconded by Dr. Blakely to approve the Agenda as written. All members present voting yes. Motion carried
On motion by Dr. Blakely and seconded by Mrs. Boget to approve the Consent Agenda which contained the following items: approval of board minutes on 1/14/19; approval of closed session minutes; approval of payment for bills, acceptance of financial reports. On roll call, all members present voting yes. Motion carried.
Ashley Detering and Lexi Lingle represented the Student Council:
Student Council has been hard at work this spring. Students are currently preparing Valentines to deliver this Thursday to all of the area nursing homes. Students are also gearing up for the blood drive on February 20 from 8am-3pm. Student committees have also been meeting regularly to plan for our Dude. Be Nice. Campaign, which will be held the week of March 18. Current plans include both planned and random acts of kindness, recognition of school support staff, and spirit week.
Mrs. Frownfelter represented the teachers:
The Guidance Dept. has collected course requests from grades 9-11 and will begin scheduling this week. Incoming freshmen will be coming to A-J this year for their placement testing and course selection on Thursday, Feb 21st. They will also be given tours of the building. Mrs. Walls will also be starting a small group starting this week (the first ever at AJ!) for girls, focusing on effective communication, relationships and self-care. The group will meet once a week for approximately 6 weeks. Ms. Maze has started the planning of Safe Celebration. She mailed out letters in November and again in January to local businesses to receive donations. Safe Celebration will be at SEMO again this year. Students will have access to the entire facility and be able to take part in the Rock Wall, Swimming, Basketball, Dodgeball and much more. We are looking for donors for dinner and breakfast, and also donors for prizes. She will start selling tickets Feb 19 to the senior class. Tickets will be 20.00 for a senior, and 25.00 for a guest. Ms. Maze is working with Judge Boie to schedule a date for seniors currently in government to come visit the Union County Courthouse. Students will be able to sit in the courtroom and listen to criminal/traffic cases. Judge Boie will then debrief the students after the cases to answer any questions they may have. Ms. Maze will be taking five students to the State Capitol Building on March 6. These students were selected last semester to be a part of Senator Fowlers Youth Advisory Committee. Ashley Detering, Jenna Hammer, Nate Kisat, Hannah Baggott and Anna Madura will be able to take a tour of the capitol building, and meet with state legislatures. They will later take part in the legislative process by debating the policies they created in October. Ms. Maze is planning the next blood drive on February 20th from 8:00 am - 3:00 pm. We have 97 appointments available with 53 currently filled. If you are interested in donating you can schedule your appointment online or by calling Ms. Maze at the high school. Mrs. Stevens’ Accounting classes will be attending the Accounting Challenge at SIU on February 22. Students have the opportunity to network, go on a campus tour, and to win scholarships. Mrs. Cleghorn’s Culinary Arts Classes made food for the Wrestling Regional Tournament concession stand to help the wrestling team raise money. We also prepared Italian Beef and desserts for the area wrestling coaches for their seeding meeting. We are currently holding our annual Chocolate Covered Strawberry Sale. The Culinary Arts classes were honored to prepare and serve lunch to all of our faculty and staff plus the sixth, seventh, and eighth grade teachers from all of our feeder schools. The students, faculty, and staff celebrated the 100th Day of School on January 31st. The week of the 100th day, the students were encouraged to complete 100 Acts of Kindness. These Acts of Kindness are displayed outside of the principal’s office. The students who completed the acts of kindness were entered in a drawing to win $100. The students were also able to wear hats on the 100th day with a donation of 100 pennies. The WYSE Team competed at SCC for their regional competition on February 7th. They placed first as a team and will advance to sectional competition at SIU in March. The following students placed in their individual categories:

Mr. Finders reported on a new Project Lead the Way Class that we will be offering next year called Computer Science Essentials. Mrs. Stevens will be teaching the course. Our Principles of Biomedical Science course will be showcased by PLTW and Astellas. Mr. Finders also reported on Professional Development.
Principal Detering reported on the Cafeteria Report, Enrollment, Discipline, and Outstanding Seniors.
Superintendent Wright reported to the board that the spring IASB Shawnee Division Meeting will be March 20 at Crab Orchard. We received a SAWA (Sport A Winning Attitude) Report on our Athletic Director, Rick Livesay and Head Basketball Coach, Mike Chamness. He also made a presentation on financial projections that he has been working on with the Illinois State Board.
On motion by Mr. Hughey and seconded by Mr. McGrath for the Board to enter into closed session at 6:55 p.m. for the following reasons (1) the purpose of appointment, employment, compensation, discipline, performance, or dismissal of specific employee of the public body or legal counsel for the public body, including hearing testimony on a complaint lodged against an employee of the public body or against legal counsel for the public to determine its validity. 5ILCS 120/2(c)(1). Collective negotiating matters between the public body and its employees or their representatives, or deliberations concerning salary schedules for one or more classes of employees. 5ILCS 120/2 (c)(3). On roll call, all members present voting yes. Motion carried.
Mr. McGrath left at 7:40 p.m.
On motion by Dr. Reach and seconded by Mr. Hughey to return to regular session at 7:43 p.m. On roll call, all members present voting yes. Motion carried.
Economic Interest Statements were handed out and completed.
On motion by Dr. Blakely and seconded by Dr. Reach to approve BETA Club State Convention overnight trip to Springfield. All members present voting yes. Motion carried.
The Board was reminded, for compliance purposes, as to their responsibility as mandated reporters.
On motion by Dr. Reach and seconded by Dr. Blakely to approve buying mat hoist and new wall pads for lower gym. On roll call, all members present voting yes. Motion carried.
A vehicle replacement list was presented by Mr. Wright.
On motion by Dr. Reach and seconded by Mrs. Boget to adjourn the Regular Meeting at 8:13 p.m. All members present voting yes. Motion carried.
