Metropolis Police Department issued the following announcement on May 28.

From the Office of the Director of Public Safety: Arrest Summary, May 19-25, 2019;

May 20, 2019

Metropolis Officers were called to the Family dollar for a theft. The manager advised she was attempting to detain the subject in the parking lot. A Massac Deputy arrived first and advised that the offender had left walking east from the store. Officers checked the area, and the subject, Leisa C Powell, 62, Paducah, KY was located on 9th St. The manager was able to identify her as the thief and wished to press charges. Powell was arrested and charged with retail theft. She was also charged with possession of a controlled substance (diazepam) after it was discovered in a pill bottle without a prescription. Powell was lodged in the Massac County Detention Center.

May 21, 2019

Metropolis Officers were called to big John’s for a shoplifter. Upon arrival, Officers were informed that the subject was observed placing items into his pockets. As he left the store, Jesse Willard Holder, Jr, 78, Metropolis was confronted by the manager and the officer. Holder denied taking any items after being asked numerous times. The 6 items were then removed from his pockets. Holder was arrested for retail theft and taken to the Metropolis Police Dept for processing. He was able to post bond and was released.

May 22, 2019

Metropolis Officers responded to a noise complaint in the 1700 block of Filmore. Upon arrival, Officers met with Robert A Smith,60, Metropolis who denied having his music too loud. A computer check revealed that Smith was wanted on a warrant for Domestic Battery issued by Massac County. Smith was arrested. During a search, Officers located a pill bottle which contained baggies of Meth as well as Diazepam and lorazepam, both being a controlled substance. Officers also located a hypodermic needle/syringe in his other pocket. Smith was charged with the warrant as well as possession of Methamphetamine, possession of controlled substance (2) and possession of hypodermic needle/syringe. Smith was lodged in the Massac County Detention Center.

Metropolis Police were called to the Metropolis elementary School at 11:15 pm for two suspicious persons at the playground. Upon arrival, Officers located two 15-year olds. Both were arrested for curfew and taken to the Metropolis Police Dept for processing. Both were released to parents with a court date.

May 24, 2019

Metropolis Officers were called to a residence on Crestview for a theft. Caller stated that her riding lawn mower was just stolen. Officers checked the area and located a subject pushing a riding mower. The victim stated that she would sign a complaint. Ryne L Collins, 35, Metropolis was charged with theft and lodged in the Massac County Detention Center.

While conducting an investigation on a missing 11-year-old female, officers went to the Humma apartments. Officers located the juvenile with a 16-year-old juvenile. The 16-year-old was wanted on a warrant issued by Massac County for Contempt of court. He had also been previously trespassed from housing property. The 16-year-old was arrested and taken to the Massac County Detention Center. He was charged with criminal trespass to state supported property and the warrant. The 11-year-old was taken back to her parents.

Danny W. Bennett,37, Metropolis was arrested in the 600 block of W. 10th. He was charged with Criminal damage to property and Burglary. The was the result of an ongoing investigation of a burglary which had occurred at one of the local laundry mats in town. Bennett was lodged in the Massac County Detention Center.

The preceding information pertains to arrests made by the Metropolis Police Department. These arrests are made on the basis of probable cause and all arrestees are presumed innocent until proven guilty.
