MASSAC COUNTY SHERIFF OFFICE: Massac County Sheriff’s Office, assisted in the disposal of Syringes, and unwanted medication with a P2D2 Drug Take Back Day

Announcement

Massac County Sheriff Office issued the following announcement on May 17.

Recently, Massac County Sheriff’s Office, assisted in the disposal of Syringes, and unwanted medication with a P2D2 Drug Take Back Day.

The Syringe disposal was an idea brought in January of 2018 by The Sheriff’s Office to a MCDAC Meeting, in the hopes of finding a way to dispose of needles with an unfortunate drug problem in our area. The idea came when an increase of needles were being found in streets, parks and playgrounds. The Sheriff’s Office Deputy Summer Clapp, and Dispatcher Abbey Kaylor, brought an idea from Sheriff Holder, to the MCDAC meeting, came up with a way to dispose of those needles no questions asked, with the Points Drop Box, located outside of the Sheriff’s Office. Several agencies brain stormed and came up with The Points Drop Box. Massac Memorial Hospital was at The Meeting and came up with a way for the needles to be collected and disposed of properly. The Points Drop Box has also collected used needles by diabetic users and people with other medical conditions needing to dispose of needles.

The Prescription Drug Disposal Program (P2D2) has been available Lobby in The Sheriff’s Office since 2011, when a Jefferson School student, Cami Horman, used the idea as a poster idea for her Massac County Soil and Water Poster, and later used as her platform in The Miss Metropolis Pageant. The Sheriff’s Office has collected over 4,000 lbs since the program started.
