Metropolis Police Department issued the following announcement on March 18.

From the Office of the Director of Public Safety: Arrest Summary, March 10-16, 2019;

March 10, 2019

Metropolis Offices were called to a disturbance in front of a residence in the 1800 block of North Ave. Upon arrival, the victim stated that he was struck in the face several times by Matt D. Marlatt,22, Metropolis who then left the scene. Officers made contact with Marlatt’s girlfriend. She was able to get a hold of Marlatt and advised him to come to the police station. Marlatt was arrested for Battery and processed. He was able to post bond and was released.

March 12, 2019

Joe Taylor,26, Cairo was arrested at 11th and Vienna. Taylor was wanted on a warrant. The warrant was issued by Massac County for Retail Theft. Taylor was lodged in the Massac County Detention Center.

March 13, 2019

Metropolis Police received a call that Kayla M. Birdwell,29, Metropolis was at the elementary school which violates an order of protection. While speaking with the school principal, offices were informed that Birdwell was the police department to turn herself in. Offices confirmed that she had violated the order of protection. Birdwell was arrested and lodged in the Massac County Detention Center.

March 14, 2019

An observant citizen called the Metropolis Police Department after seeing a male subject enter a house that is unoccupied in the 900 block of Girard. Upon arrival, a Metropolis Sergeant observed Chris D Reid,41, Metropolis loading a cart with items from inside the residence. MPD was able to contact the owner of the home who stated that Reid did not have permission to remove any items or to be inside the residence. Reid was arrested for Residential Burglary and Theft. A search revealed a bag containing Meth, paraphernalia, and a controlled substance (Lyrica). Reid was also charged with possession of Meth, Possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia. Reid was lodged in the Massac County Detention Center.

March 16, 2019

On 03/16/19 at approximately 10:04 pm, officers were dispatched to the Dollar General located in the 1100 block of East 8th Street in reference to a disorderly Male subject that was refusing to leave the store. The Male was reported to be wearing jeans and carrying a grey colored bag. Officers responded to the area. Upon arrival, the subject was walking towards the bowling alley. Upon observing the Metropolis Canine Officer, the subject, later identified as Jacob L Dunstan,19, Metropolis took off running. Officers chased him into the bowling alley. Dunstan was caught in side the bowling alley and started fighting the officers. A Taser was deployed and he was taken into custody but continued fighting and kicking at the officers. A deputy and officer were kicked in the chest as they were attempting to put him in the squad car. Officers found proceeds from the Dollar General which Dunstan stole. Officers also found that Dunstan was in possession of controlled substances. Dunstan was charged with retail theft, Aggravated Battery (X3) and possession of a controlled substance (Suboxone). He was lodged in the Massac County Detention Center.

The preceding information pertains to arrests made by the Metropolis Police Department. These arrests are made on the basis of probable cause and all arrestees are presumed innocent until proven guilty.
