Police673

Union County State's Attorney issued the following announcement on Feb. 7.

Union County State’s Attorney Tyler R. Edmonds and Union County Sheriff Scott Harvel announced today that William P. Wasmund (DOB 10-28-1970) of 1510 Hyland Road, Chester, Illinois has been indicted on one (1) count of First Degree Murder in connection with the death of Jeffery A. Spicer (DOB 09-13-1965) of Murphysboro. The charges result from an extensive investigation by the Union County Sheriff’s Office and Jackson County Sheriff’s Office. Spicer was found dead along the highway at 7625 State Route 3 North in rural Union County on September 16, 2018. Wasmund is charged with setting a shotgun with a trigger set to fire when the door of a shed opened knowing that such act created a strong probability of death or great bodily harm to any person opening the door of the shed. The shed was located at the 7625 State Route 3 North property.

Wasmund was taken into custody early Wednesday morning at the Chester Police Department. Wasmund is set for First Appearance on Thursday, February 7 at 9:00 a.m. before Presiding Judge Mark Boie at the Union County Courthouse in Jonesboro. Wasmund is being held in the Jackson County Jail on $1,000,000 bond.

Agencies assisting the Union County Sheriff’s Office and Jackson County Sheriff’s Office in the investigation include Illinois State Police Crime Scene, Carbondale Police / SIUC Police Bomb Squad, Illinois Secretary of State Police Bomb Squad and the Union County Coroner’s Office.

The Union County State’s Attorney’s Office reminds the public that charges are not evidence of guilt. A defendant is presumed innocent and is entitled to a fair trial in which the government has the burden of proving guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.
