Metropolis Police Department issued the following announcement on Feb. 5.

From the Office of the Director of Public Safety: Arrest Summary, January 27-February 3, 2019;

January 29, 2019

A caller informed the Metropolis Police Department that Craig L. Montgomery,27, Metropolis was walking down Catherine St. Montgomery was wanted on warrants. As a Metropolis Officer approached, Montgomery was advised to stop and that he was under arrest. Montgomery started whining and told the officer to leave him alone. Montgomery then fled on foot. A foot chase ensued, and Montgomery was captured a few blocks away. Montgomery was wanted on Massac County warrants for Aggravated Domestic Battery, Criminal Trespass to Property (2), and Criminal Damage to Property. He was also charged with Resisting Arrest. Montgomery was lodged in the Massac County Detention Center.

Isreal C.R. Avila, 28, Metropolis was arrested on W. 10th near the Dollar General. Avila was wanted on warrants issued by Massac County. The warrants were for Domestic Battery and Violation of an order of protection. Avila was lodged in the Massac County Detention Center.

January 30, 2019

A Metropolis Sergeant observed white Kia on 5th and Filmore traveling at a high rate of speed. With radar, he confirmed the speed as 47 mph in a posted 30 mph zone. A traffic stop was conducted. The Kia also had expired registration. A computer check revealed that the driver, Lily J. Norton, 27, Ozark, IL had a suspended driver’s license. Norton was arrested and taken to the Metropolis Police Dept. She was charged with driving while license suspended, expired registration and speeding. Norton was able to post bond and was released.

January 31, 2019

Metropolis Officers responded to a residence in the 900 block of Vienna. The caller called to report two trespassers at the residence. Upon arrival, officers observed, Joe J. Taylor,26, Paducah, KY. Taylor was wanted on a Massac County warrant for Retail Theft. He was taken into custody. The second person was Jeanne L. Mann, 37, Metropolis. After gathering her belonging, the homeowner asked her to show her contents from the backpack to make sure it wasn’t the callers’ property. As Mann opened the bag a glass smoking pipe with Meth residue fell out. Mann was arrested for possession of drug paraphernalia. Both were lodged in the Massac County Detention Center.

The Metropolis Detective Sergeant made a traffic stop on a Chevrolet pick-up truck in the 700 block of E. 6th St. The Metropolis K9 alerted to the presence of drugs in the vehicle. A search was conducted and a large amount of Meth, drug paraphernalia used for the selling and distribution of drugs as well as a gun and extra ammunition was found in the vehicle. The driver, Rickie J. Varvel, 36, Metropolis was informed he was under arrest. The officers observed he also had knives on his person. Varvel then broke away from the officers and ran. Not knowing if he had another gun on him, a Taser was deployed. Varvel was then taken into custody. Varvel was charged with Possession of Meth, possession with intent to deliver, unlawful use of a weapon, resisting arrest, and armed violence. Varvel was lodged in the Massac County Detention Center.

February 2, 2019

Metropolis Officers were called to the area of 7th and Catherine for a female on the ground near the roadway. Metropolis Officers observed Wanda G. Martin, 48, Metropolis there. She was taken to Massac Memorial Hospital for a mental health evaluation. While at the hospital, she became agitated and aggressive. Martin struck one of the nurses. She also pulled a Sharps Container off the wall and grabbed a hypodermic needle/syringe and a pair of scissors. As a Metropolis Officer attempted to calm her down, she tried to attack the officer. He pushed her back and she began cutting herself. A Taser was deployed, and she was taken under control. Once cleared from the hospital, Martin was charged with Criminal Damage to Property, Aggravated Battery and Aggravated Assault. She was lodged in the Massac County Detention Center.

A metropolis Sergeant stopped a beige Toyota on 12th and Filmore. A computer check revealed that the registration had been cancelled. A computer check on the driver, Gregory L. Mays, 42, Paducah, KY revealed that his driver’s license was suspended. Mays was arrested and charged with driving while license suspended and operation of a motor vehicle with cancelled registration. Mays was lodged in the Massac County Detention Center.

Xavier M. Smith, 34, Metropolis was arrested at Huck’s. Smith was wanted on a warrant. The warrant was issued by Williamson County, IL for failure to appear on Obstructing ID. Smith was lodged in the Massac County Detention Center.

A Metropolis Officer observed a subject in the Gazebo of Washington Park at 11:45 pm. The parked is closed after 10:00pm. A computer check revealed that Michael S. Hurst, 50, Metropolis was wanted on a warrant. The warrant was issued by pope County for Failure to appear on a traffic offense. Hurst was arrested and lodged in the Massac County Detention Center.

The preceding information pertains to arrests made by the Metropolis Police Department. These arrests are made on the basis of probable cause and all arrestees are presumed innocent until proven guilty.
