Student Council has ‘adopted’ 15 children through the “Pay it Forward” Program. Students will shop next Monday for the items and work together in group to wrap them. Following the holiday break, Student Council will begin planning for the implementation of the Dude. Be Nice. Campaign to encourage everyone to consider their actions and the effects they can have on others. This campaign is designed to promote and support a positive school culture.

Courtney Garner and Crystal Houseman represented the teachers. The items of interest presented were as follows:

-In October, the varsity scholar bowl team taped two episodes of Scholastic Hi-Q. The first episode aired on Nov. 11, and we are waiting to hear back about the airdate of the next two episodes. On Monday, Mr. Horn and Mr. Dawley took the team back for the quarter-finals, where we lost to Johnston City. The team did a great job, especially since this is our first year doing this in a while. Currently the JV team is undefeated. Update: A-J’s second round episode will air Feb. 3. Julie Lewis wrote and received a $100 grant from the PAST organization. This will be used for fuel when she takes her seniors to Springfield to the Lincoln Museum and tomb in December. In October the Guidance office took a group to Shawnee College Senior Day as well as a group of juniors to the SEMO College Fair. Students enjoyed learning about the different colleges and educational opportunities available to them. We have also had 11 colleges or military branches visit and speak to seniors about post-secondary plans. Tomorrow (Tuesday, November 20) Lyndsey Walls will be attending a follow-up training on Trauma in Schools. The Culinary Arts classes made and donated homemade cinnamon rolls to the Veteran’s Day program at Lincoln School. Eight students from Culinary Arts also went and helped serve food that morning. The National Honor Society presented Shawnna Rhine at WIBH and The New Coats New Hope Campaign with a $220 donation. The club was able to raise money through community donations made during the Halloween trick or treat, student donations from wearing costumes to school on Halloween, and a donation made by the AJCHS Art Club. The WIBH New Coat New Hope Campaign purchases new coats each winter for needy children in our area. The club has also collected numerous new or gently used coats, hats, and gloves to be donated to the campaign at the end of the month. Ms. Garner completed the fourteen week training for the biomedical class through Project Lead the Way. The class has had several guest speakers from the community including a CSI, a forensic scientist, a detective, and members if the Union County Ambulance Service. They also visited Moreland Eye Care to tour the facility. We currently have two more visits scheduled this semester, and will be scheduling more next semester. The students seem to really be enjoying the course. Ms. Maze sponsored the first blood drive on Oct 31. We had a great turn out and exceeded our goal with a total of 82 units, which exceeded our goal of 72! Our next blood drive is scheduled for February 20. We will have a new group out of Cape due to redistricting at the Red Cross headquarters. We are

hoping to have a smooth transition with this new group coming in. Ms. Maze attended a conference at SEMO in

October that discussed the First Amendment and how it has been redefined by Supreme Court Cases. She is looking forward to bringing that curriculum into her classroom.

Mrs. Houseman recently received a $50 gift card to Amazon from an anonymous donor. She’s working to make reading more exciting and accessible for students through drawing attention to what she’s reading personally and highlighting those books in her classroom. Currently, she’s working with Mr. Horn to launch an accessible book initiative. Mr. Stamp, Mrs. Vancil and Ms. McLain had 53 students audition (including 12 males!) for the spring musical The Little Mermaid. This is the largest cast we’ve seen in many years. There is certainly a lot of talent at AJ. Mrs. Vancil started Stage Crew two weeks ago and has had around 20 students in attendance. Ms. McLain will begin Pit Band rehearsals in January. Mr. Stamp will begin rehearsals with the cast in December. He also plans to include junior high and grade school students in the production on some level. The following students won awards in the Anna Arts Center annual art competition: Honorable Mention: Jacy Hargrave—drawing Breanna Jones— drawing Chloe Gamber—Drawing Kam Hancock—drawing Kam Hancock—scratchboard 3rd Place: John Bird—colored pencil Kristen Brimm—photography Grace Dollus—painting 2nd place: Chloe Gamber—wood burning Beth Ann Agne—photography Angel Helm—ceramic sculpture Grace Dollus—painting 1st place Katie Jo Kirk— Drawing Johnny Bird—painting Savannah Edwards—photography Trinity Sweet—collage Madison Johnston—ceramic sculpture. The AJ Concert Choir will be recording their portion of “Sounds of the Season” on November 29th, to be broadcast during Christmas Eve and Christmas Day on WSIL. The Concert Choir will also be performing for the Retired Teachers Association Luncheon on December 1st, and has plans to sing carols for local residents and businesses during the month of December. The AJ Pep Band will be performing at upcoming varsity basketball games on the dates of December 7th, 8th, and 18th. The Music Department will hold its Winter Concert on December 11th in the Auditorium at 7pm. The concert is free and open to the public.
