Massac Community Unified School District 1 Board of Education met September 24.

Here is the minutes as provided by the board:

A Regular Meeting of the Board of Education of Massac County Unit School District No. 1, Massac County, Illinois, was called to order in the Board Room of the Massac Unit #1 Board of Education, located at 401 Metropolis St., Metropolis, IL, in said District at 6:30 PM by Board President, Mr. Mark Souders.


Upon a roll call, the following members answered present:

Present: Jeff Brugger

               Don Koch 

               Jennifer 

               Larrison Kathy 

               Rushing Larry 

               Sommer Mark 

               Souders 

               Bobette Steele

Also Present: Jason Hayes, Superintendent

                Lisa Monkman, Supt./Board 

                Secretary Debbe McCabe, 

                Bookkeeper/Treasurer News 

                Media MCEA Representatives

At 6:30 PM with a motion from Rushing and a second from Brugger the Board voted to go to Executive Session to consider information relative to employment, appointment, or dismissal of specific employees or officers, collective negotiating matters between employers and their employees or representatives; to discuss litigation – probable, imminent, pending or filed. Roll call: Brugger, Koch, Larrison, Rushing, Sommer, Steele and Souders voted yes. Motion carried.

At 6:42 PM the Board returned to open session.

Invited Guests/Public Comment:

None

A motion was made by Sommer and seconded by Steele to approve the consent agenda consisting of Minutes/Treasurer’s Report/Bills Payroll and Quarterly Payroll. Roll call: Brugger, Koch, Larrison, Rushing, Sommer, Steele and Souders voted yes. Motion carried.

With a motion from Rushing and a second from Brugger at 7:00 PM the Board voted to suspend the Regular Meeting to go to the Budget Hearing. Roll call: Brugger, Koch, Larrison, Rushing, Sommer, Steele and Souders voted yes. Motion carried.

Upon a roll call, the following members answered present:

Public Testimony – None.

With a motion from Rushing and a second from Koch the Board voted to approve the 2018-2019 Budget as presented. Roll call: Brugger, Koch, Larrison, Rushing, Sommer, Steele and Souders voted yes. Motion carried.

At 7:10 PM with a motion from Sommer and a second from Brugger the Board voted to adjourn the Budget Hearing and return to the Regular Meeting. Roll call: Brugger, Koch, Larrison, Rushing, Sommer, Steele and Souders voted yes. Motion carried.

Superintendent’s Report – Jason Hayes, Superintendent

A. Monthly Expenditures B.

6th Grade Alignment – Met with all 6th grade teachers; followed 7th/8th grade example, identified ELA Standards to target; and agreed on common novels, assessments, supplemental reading & writing assignments. C.

Short Term Substitute License – 28 participants and covered mandated topics as well as personal items specific to Massac Unit #1. D.

Communication Plan – Rough draft almost complete hope to send out for review later this week.

Unfinished Business: Contract for Athletic Trainor – Tabled.

New Business: A motion was made by Brugger and seconded by Larrison to Amend the 2018-2019 School Calendar. Roll call: Brugger, Koch, Larrison, Rushing, Sommer, Steele and Souders voted yes. Motion carried.

A motion was made by Rushing and seconded by Sommer to Approve the Resignation of Alison Jeffords, MCHS Special Education Aide. Roll call: Brugger, Koch, Larrison, Rushing, Sommer, Steele and Souders voted yes. Motion carried.

A motion was made by Sommer and seconded by Koch to Approve the Resignation of Kim Futrell, MCHS Special Education Aide. Roll call: Brugger, Koch, Larrison, Sommer, Steele and Souders voted yes. Rushing Abstained. Motion carried 6 to 1.

A motion was made by Brugger and seconded by Koch to Approve the following Retirements: Jeff Newbold, Jr High Custodian, effective at the end of the 2020-2021 school year; and Patti Dunning Jefferson 1st Grade, effective at the end of the 2021-2022 school year. Roll call: Brugger, Koch, Larrison, Rushing, Sommer, Steele and Souders voted yes. Motion carried.

 A motion was made by Koch and seconded by Steele to Approve the following hires: Susan Windhorst, MCHS Special Education Teacher Aide; Ninette Amtmann, MES 6 hour Cafeteria Worker; and Peggy Shearl, Unity 4.5 hour Cafeteria Worker. Roll call: Brugger, Koch, Larrison, Rushing, Sommer, Steele and Souders voted yes. Motion carried.

With a motion from Sommer and a second from Brugger the Board voted to adjourn at 7:26 PM. Roll call: Brugger, Koch, Larrison, Rushing, Sommer, Steele and Souders voted yes. Motion carried.

Don Koch attended the Brookport Gym Dedication on Saturday Night, good job to the Brookport Betterment Committee.

Ribbon Cutting for Head Start is Thursday at 5:30 pm.
